Light Em Up

The Mayor had some nice things to say about the football team on Saturday night, inviting us up on stage to help light Westfield's Christmas tree. We're honored to have been honored, if that's a thing. It's been said before on here, but we love our community! It was a pretty good time, but then, somehow, Coach Gilbert got a hold of the microphone.
Next thing we all knew, we were sprinting down the lit pathway, bursting onto the green, and singing the school song around the bright-green tree. Or maybe that was just in my head. What can I say? Coach has that effect. And it was cold.

Last but not least, AP All-State is out. Huge shout out to all of our young men who earned honors:
  • WR - Devin Reece
  • OL - Zane Burtron
  • DL - Jacob Robinson
  • HM - Nick Ferrer, Elvin Caldwell, Frank Grimes, Nick Krieg, Mitch Turley, Matt Crupi, Turner Edwards, and Nick Dowd
That's a lot of Rocks.

Westfield, A True Team

The morning after the end of your football season is one of the most difficult to face. The sun seems dimmer. The world, colder. There is an emptiness. The singularity of purpose that drove you for the last several months has suddenly been ripped away. This is loss.

Whether your season ends at Lucas Oil Stadium or on a brightly lit field somewhere else, it is a painful thing. There are no more film sessions, no workouts, no practice tomorrow. Finally, you can sleep in, but you quickly discover that you would rather be tired and groggy and sweating with your team. When did your warm bed become second place?

Westfield became intimately acquainted with second place last night, and the bittersweet success it represents. It was an emotional scene following the 5A State Final. Tears were shed and hugs exchanged between men that call each other "brothers." One gets the sense that there would have been tears even had the Rocks won. Going into the game, we knew that, no matter the outcome, this was the last time this wonderful family would play together. An end must come to all things.

This was not the end we wanted, nor the way we wanted to go out. There have been brighter spots throughout the season than were shown last night, but it was not for lack of effort or desire. Sometimes, no matter how prepared, and how hard you've worked, and how bad you want it... it is not meant to be. And, to give credit where credit is due, we played a very good football team. It would have taken a very special night for us to beat them. Last night was not such a night.

Yet, it was special, for many other reasons that will become easier to stomach with time and distance.Through the grief, we are reminded that God is still good. The journey was very worthy of the destination. The opportunity and experience was one to be remembered and treasured for years to come. Let's not forget that history was made. A community was energized. Differences were made in many lives, both local and global. And a legacy was left.

I hope when people reflect upon this team, they see in it a blueprint for a very "right" kind of success. Teamwork remains the world's very best competitive advantage. This is true not just on fields of sport, but in almost every area of life. There are many areas of talent that can be built and developed, but teamwork is both the most elusive and most effective, accessible by everyone. This truth, revealed slowly over hours, days, weeks, and months of dedication to a purpose, is neither secret nor unique . It can work for anyone in any situation. Come together, work your butt off, serve one another... and you will make a difference in the lives around you. Forge a team, and opportunity will shower you.

Many of us coaches have been a part of true teams before. Likely, it was that very experience that motivated us to dedicate a large part of our lives to chasing the dream again. It may only come once in a great many years. It is that special. It truly has the power to move mountains. To have found it again, with this team, is truly a blessing.

We are thankful to our community for supporting us so very well. Administrators, school, parents, fans, even neighbors. We have felt the love. The picture below was on Twitter with the tagline "You don't see this everyday in high school football." Very true, and we are filled with gratitude.

Most of all, I'd like to thank the players. We set out to make this journey one of the most amazing experiences of your life. Somewhere along the way, it became one of ours as well. And that makes second place just a little less painful.

Thank you for a great season!

#RockReport - Semi-State Final; Concord

Varsity Football completed their fourth step on the tournament run, defeating the Concord Minutemen 35-3 on Friday night.

Offensively, the Shamrocks game
out and punched the Minutemen in the mouth, scoring on all of their early possessions. Elvin Caldwell had another strong showing on the ground, punching the ball in several times behind the blocking of Zane Burtron and Renzo Alvarez. The big TD pass of the game was when Nick Ferrer found Nick Henderson down the middle for an early score.

The Rock Defense dominated the high-scoring Minutemen, allowing only one Field Goal on the night. Matt Crupi was in the backfield often, making sure their Quarterback got muddy. Mitch Turley and Turner Edwards continued their trend of champion-quality play, refusing to give up any easy yards. The defense started out with a big play when Luke Peters intercepted Concord’s very first play from scrimmage, and kept the momentum from there.

Shamrock Special Teams responded when called on, holding the Shamrock advantage in this phase of the game. Matt Kinney played well on the kickoff squad, and Ryan Wonderlin kept things consistent with Rock-solid effort.

Special mention should be given to Daniel Kainrath, Zach Krieg, Andrew Sweet, and Josh Hayward. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They pushed the train throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Lucas Oil Stadium to play in the State Final against Indianapolis Cathedral. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Resolved and Returned

I will publish the official Rock Report tomorrow as usual, but wanted to drop a quick note today. As most fans know by now, your Rocks won on Friday night and are State-Bound! We feel incredibly blessed for the opportunity to play in the state finals against Indianapolis Cathedral. What a wonderful opportunity!

A few notes, as I'm sure many of you are curious about the upcoming schedule. Some of this may be subject to change, but here is what we know now:

  • Calendar has been updated on the right at the blog with our planned schedule.
  • Because Lucas Oil is an indoor stadium, we would like to practice indoors a few times this week. Access to facilities is pending and could alter some things for players (and parents).
  • Thanksgiving Day practice will be early so that we can all have family time in the afternoon/evening.
  • Friday will have a "send off" event. Follow the team from the high school to the stadium, cheering and honking the entire way if you would like. We plan to leave at 4:30pm for the 7:05pm game.
  • Game time could change depending on how the games go prior to ours.
Another important note from Friday night...

As those of you who attended know, we resolved to be good neighbors and organized a collection for the family of the Carmel HS football player who lost his father during the game the previous week. Our goal had been to raise $3,000 to help with funeral costs. Freshmen players circulated throughout both the Home and Visiting crowd, collecting money. I've been told that we knocked our goal out of the park, and the actual figure raised was closer to $7,500! That is amazing, and a real victory for both our fans and Concord's fans, many of whom graciously participated. Our hats off to our visitors, and much respect to a very classy program. This game is truly a blessing when it brings together two great communities for a good cause.

Finally, we are unbelievably grateful for the support we have received all year. We truly feel that our team has been blessed, and we look forward to representing our community (and the north half of the state) well in the upcoming contest. Thank you.

We resolved to return, and we will do just that on Friday. Hope to see you there.

Blessed and Resolved

We are beyond excited for the opportunity to not only play in the Semi-state contest, but also to host it. Last week was a very long bus ride, and yet, despite the distance, there were a whole bunch of you that made the trip. We had a great crowd, and the memory of the team celebrating with fans after the game is one that will stick with me for some time. You never know what you are going to get on the road, especially when it is cold and not exactly pleasant, and we were once again reminded how blessed we are.

This week is a home game. The weather may not be different, but we get to play in our community. The one that has supported us and is trying like heck to make a new stadium a reality. We can only hope to earn that support on the field this Friday, showing you how much we want to keep our football family together for one more week.

An extra week may not seem like a lot to some, but to us it means the world. We resolved to keep the train going as long as possible, and now Concord is going to fight us for the track. We need every Shamrock voice in the crowd this Friday. We want to pack Red Stanley field, and prove not only that we could fill a bigger stadium, but also that we have the best football community in the state.

We brought central Indiana football up north last week. Let's show the north how we do it this Friday. Let's show them what Rock Football is all about.

Hope to see you at the game.

From the News-Sentinel...

Nice little article here on Friday's victory. Much respect to Snider. They are a great program, and that was a big-time win for us. We hope for more opportunities to square off against them in the future.

#RockReport - Regional Final, Snider

Varsity Football completed their third step on the tournament run, defeating the Fort Wayne Snider Panthers 36-7 Friday night.

Offensively, the Shamrocks were didn’t need to resort to a punt until very late in the game. They built a 36 point lead behind the blocking of Anthoney Daugherty and the consistent hands of Ben Lotfalian. Milo Beam’s big 3rd down conversion catch kept one of the many scoring drives going, providing just one of many highlights on the night.

The Rock Defense kept the Panthers from scoring until there were just over 6 minutes left in the game. Mitch Turley led the impressive display, assisted by the consistent play of Dan Liebbe and Jay Simons. The D showed extreme mental toughness when, after a Turner Edwards 100 yard interception return was negated by penalty, they held Snider out of the end zone, denying them what seemed to be assured points.

Shamrock Special Teams had a few highlights of their own, led by Nick Dowd. Dowd’s 2-point conversion pass to Nick Krieg on a busted extra point attempt was a stellar display of toughness. Max and Will McCool contributed to the consistency in this phase of the game as well.

Special mention should be given to Josh Hayward, Ryan Rubicz, and Jared Bayha. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They made every second count throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the Concord Minutemen for the Semi-State title. Kickoff is at 7:30pm.

#RockReport - Sectional Final; McCutcheon

Varsity Football completed their second step on the tournament run, defeating the McCutcheon Mavericks 45-21 on Friday night.

Offensively, the Shamrocks jumped out early again, burying McCutcheon 31-0 by halftime. Nick Ferrer led the explosive offense, racking up 160 yards to Nick Henderson alone. Henderson had a couple of pretty catches deep across the middle that ended in scores for the Rocks. Zane Burtron led a consistent offensive line that both protected Ferrer and enabled an 11 yards per carry average for Elvin Caldwell.

The Rock Defense was stingy for another week, shutting out the Mavericks early and only allowing late points. Matt Crupi had a stellar night, with Luke Peters backing him. Peters’s fumble recovery was huge, netting an extra possession for the Rocks to score.

Shamrock Special Teams contributed to the scoring this week when Josh Beer blocked a punt that was recovered by Cameron Harrison in the end zone. Mitch Turley added a solid night that helped the Rocks lock down the Mavericks in this phase.

Special mention should be given to Sam Trompen, Jordan Grimes, and Jamarcus Davis. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They kept the focus on beating McCutcheon throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Fort Wayne Snider for the Regional title game. Kickoff is at 7:30pm.

#Gameday - Sectional Final, McCutcheon

I was able to hear a couple of great speeches by two seniors last night as part of our usual Thursday activities. They spoke from the heart and reminded us all just how special our football family is. It definitely made me feel blessed for the opportunity to continue working with these young men.

Tonight, McCutcheon threatens to end it all.

We'd love to win a sectional title for the Westfield community. Our school and fans certainly deserve it, and we hope you all will come out again tonight to support us. More than that, though, we want to keep our family together for another week. That's what we're fighting for.

This is step two.

#RockReport - Sectional I, Harrison

Varsity Football completed their first step on the tournament run, defeating the Harrison Raiders 42-14 on Friday night.

Offensively, the Shamrocks jumped out early, building a 42-7 lead by halftime. Devin Reece had a solid night and led the O alongside the consistent running of Elvin Caldwell. Nick Henderson snagged the first touchdown reception that led to many more for the Shamrocks.

The Rock Defense stymied the Raiders, holding them to a lone score each half. Matt Crupi played well, with the consistent play of Dan Liebbe in front. Luke Peters expended great effort to chase down a free-running Raider, refusing to give Harrison any easy points. The younger defense also had a solid 4th down stop in the second half, proving that the stout Rock defense permeates all levels of our program.

Shamrock Special Teams executed well, keeping the edge in this phase of the game. Cameron Harrison shone and Jay Simons added a solid consistency for the unit. Gavin Cross’s onside kick recovery was instrumental in deflating any thoughts of a Raider comeback.

Special mention should be given to Josh Tuffnell, Caleb Sanburn, and Noah Smith. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They resolved to continue playing throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Fridays, when Westfield will face the McCutcheon Mavericks for the Sectional 11 Title. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

A Portrait of Resolve

I can't resist sharing articles when I come across them. It's a weakness, I know. As coaches, we are blessed to be some of the very first people to witness and recognize extraordinary resolve. Those intimately involved with the program know how special our kids are long before the papers pick up on it. So I'll admit that it's a little extra sweet when they finally do, and makes me want to share.

The Noblesville Times ran a story about Frank Grimes recently that I think is stellar. There's not a good online link unless you have an account with the Times, but you can see the headline on their main page right now. They were kind enough to pass along a copy of the article to the coaching staff. I won't steal their scoop, but I will post a couple quotations as both a teaser and because we're proud of our family members.

I enjoyed the intro, particularly the focus on "resolve:"
The word resolve was visible, with the date 11-29-13 underneath to signify the Class 5A state championship game.

While Grimes' position in front of Westfield's season mantra was coincidental, no word better signifies his ability to overcome both family tragedy and major injury to return to the field.
And then, of course, a closing quotation from Coach Gilbert:
“The only time, ever, I've seen him lie down on the field was when he tore his ACL. And then he just gets up and jogs off the field. It's a blessing and nobody deserves it more than this kid.”

#Gameday - Harrison Part Two

We get to kickoff our postseason journey tonight. I hope a lot of you plan to make the cold, (possibly) wet trip up to Harrison to see us. If not, we'll be tweeting the scores, so feel free to follow and cheer in warmth. I promise it would be far more exciting to witness our resolve in person, though, and we appreciate every single clapping pair of hands that ends up making the trip.

Solid article in Indy Star today. Check it out here. I would only add that while we're absolutely thankful for the opportunity in front of us this post-season, moving to 5A did not earn us an 8-1 record. We played the same regular season schedule we have for years. We've stood toe to toe with some of the best teams in the state at any level of the game. This group of young men deserves complete recognition for that. I'm very proud to have worked with them and seen their resolve on a daily basis.

Parity is certainly a noble goal, but good teams are also good teams. Butler basketball has made a name for itself in the NCAA "Big Dance" despite enrollment numbers because of the quality of their program, and the dedication and work ethic of their team. I feel like it should be noted that Rocks reflect a similar formula for success, a formula that works in any arena. Resolve will take you far in life, perhaps farther than you may have ever fathomed when your journey began.

Step one tonight. We fight for our lives. We resolve to do everything we can to keep this family together for one more week. That is our focus. Best of luck to all the other teams out there still fighting.

I love fall in in Indiana!

Refreshed. Renewed. Resolved.

That was the first time we've had a bye in, well, forever. Pretty nice to just focus on us and getting better for a whole week. Rest up. Recover a bit and prepare for the tournament. JV and Freshmen have ended. You can find a wrap-up of the last games here. Special props to the Frosh for claiming a share of the conference. We have good things coming in addition to the good things already here. What a great day to be a Shamrock!

For now, we remain resolved to return to Lucas Oil Stadium. Back to business and getting ready for Friday night. Hope to see you all there as we open the 5A tourney at Harrison. Long trip, I know, but we'll make it worth your while. Promise.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The Junior Varsity Westfield Football team had an outstanding end to their JV season with a 51-18 victory over the Bronchos of Lafayette Jeff. This win propelled the JV football team to a winning record for the season with a 5-4 record.

The Offensive unit for the JV Rocks was clicking all night. The night started out with a 6 yard run by Brandon Karsnick on the first snap for the offense. The next score came from the player of the game, Ryan Pepiot, to Max McCool on a 10 yard pass. The two later hooked up for another score and the big play of the night for the offense, this time with a 56 yard pass from Ryan to Max with love. Pepiot also scored on two rushing touchdowns on the night, one from 2 yards and one from 4 yards. The “Mr. Consistancy” award winner for the night was Julian Lytle, who ran hard all night and scored on a 5 yard rush. Jordan Grimes finished the scoring for the JV Rocks with a 3 yard run. With all of this scoring, the offensive line did an outstanding job led by Zach Krieg and Austin Gould.

The Defensive Rocks also had an outstanding game, causing 4 turn overs and denying the Bronchos offense on a goalline stand. The night started out with a bang when Cameron Harrison intercepted the Bronchos QB on the 3rd play of the game setting up the Rocks for their first score. Chris Davis caused a fumble on the Bronchos third possession which was recovered by Evan Harlan. Later in the half, the JV Rocks defense had a goalline stand led by Tyler Keller and Josh Heyward. The duo combined on two consecutive plays to drive the Bronchos backwards and force them to throw an incomplete pass on 4th down and caused a turnover on downs. Ryan Rubicz had a big night with an interception to end the half, and a fumble recovery in the second half. The second fumble of the night was caused by Jacob Pence and Noah B. Smith combining for a tackle and strip of the ball.

Special Teams rounded out the night with big play after big play. The first big play was on the Bronchos second possession of the night. Lafayette Jeff’s Offense was forced to punt and Jacob Eccles came screaming through their punt team and blocked the punt attempt through the back of the endzone for a safety. This gave the Rocks a 9-0 lead. Will Harrison made all of his extra point attempts and placed the ball perfectly on kick-offs so that Daniel Kainrath and Colin White could make numerous tackles. Gavin Cross also got in the action with a big kick-off return for the Rocks on special teams.

This victory by the JV football team insured that all three phases of High School football for Westfield had a winning record. The Varsity 8-1, Junior Varsity 5-4, and Freshman football at 7-2. This marks a great ending to this stage of the year for the JV football team. The players will now help the varsity prepare with their Resolve to Return and the second season of the year, the playoffs.

Freshmen

The Freshmen Football Team finished their season on Monday night with a victory over Lafayette Jeff 18-0. This victory gives the rocks a 7-2 record and a share of the HCC conference championship for freshmen. The rocks started out the game with the defense forcing a 3 and out. Jackson Garrett returned the punt and gave the offense great field position on the Bronchos 35 yard line. The offense stalled and couldn’t get the ball into the end-zone. The defense came out ready to go and again stopped the Bronchos offense. This time the Freshmen Rocks offense got into the end-zone on an Andy Sweet pass to Evan Manley for 25 yards. The defense came back out and Josh Tuffnell and Justin Frey did not let them get any yards. The two of them led the defense on the stop. Brian Skelton got a sack to force a punt by the Bronchos. The offense got the ball on the 45 yard line and was determined to score again before half. Caleb Sanburn and Jared Bayha lead the ground attack by rushing to the left side then the right side and mixing it up with a jump cut here and a stiff arm there. The ball got down to the 12 yard line. Then Andy Sweet threw a ball that was just out of the reach of the defender and fell right into the hands of Evan Manley for another touchdown. The rocks attempted a fake field goal by a shovel pass from Jackson Garrett to Hank Grenda but it got stopped on the 1 yard line. Making the score 12-0 at halftime.

The second half started with a kickoff return by TJ Trzil to the Rocks 40 yard line. TJ was then the running back and made a couple great carries and reads to get the ground game going. The offensive line of Asher Gannon, Austin Dollens, Greg Pietsch, Josh Tuffnell, Levi Gleason and Chad Reeh did a great job pushing the piles and keeping the defense out of the backfield. The defense stepped up in the second half forcing turnovers. The first was an interception by Carson Broshar. He made an excellent play and dove to catch the ball right before it hit the turf. The offense used this interception for another Sweet to Manley TD. This time it was a 33 yard pass. The defense followed up one interception with another interception this time by Connor Voorhis. He returned it 12 yards to the Bronchos 23 yard line. The offense faced with several penalties turned to Mitch Alderink to try and put the ball in the end-zone. He fought his way through several arm tackles but was never able to get into the end-zone. The special teams for the Freshmen Rocks were very special. On two straight punts the rocks forced a fumble and recovered the ball. The first was recovered by Hayden Russell and the second by Drew Neustifter.

The Freshmen Rocks team showed a lot of resolve this year fighting back on several different games to snatch a victory from the other team right at the end of the game. They put in a lot of hard work and have a bright future in this program. Congratulations to the Freshmen Football team, coaches, managers and everyone involved for this very successful year.

Awesome seasons, Rocks. And thanks go to Coaches Bennett and Pribbeno for filling us in each week! Now... Resolve to Return!

#RockReport - Jeff

Varsity Football secured their first ever HCC conference championship on Friday, defeating the Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos, 38-14.

Offensively, the Shamrocks started slowly, but finished strong. Nick Ferrer dazzled with four TD passes on the night. Dan Liebbe and Ben Lotfalian helped pound out the yardage on play after play. The big play of the night was Milo Beam’s catch to set up a TD right before the half.

The Rock Defense held the explosive Broncho offense to only two scores. Luke Peters had an early interception and saved a touchdown later in the game. The Defensive Tackles had a consistent game, bottling up the shifty Jefferson running game. The defense game up with three early turnover, none bigger than Jay Simons’s interception late in the second quarter.

Shamrock Special Teams held down their phase of the game, providing field position advantage throughout the night. The long punts of Josh Estridge kept the Bronchos pinned, while big plays like the Brandon Karsnick kickoff return set the offense in a great spot. The consistent play of Cameron Shaw, Matt Kinney, and Nick Krieg helped make this phase a success.

Special mention should be given to Zach Patterson, Dalton Davis, Chris Davis, and Brock Ginder. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They kept their focus on the HCC title throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football two Fridays from now, when Westfield will open the postseason with a showdown in West Lafayette against the William Henry Harrison Raiders. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The Junior Varsity Westfield Football team traveled to Noblesville on Saturday 10/12/13 and played a truly dominating game against the Milles of Noblesville. The JV Shamrocks came away with a decisive 20-6 victory contributing to the Westfield Football Programs sweep of the “Rival” Millers on the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity Levels.

The JV offense sputtered a bit at the beginning of the game but scored at the half on a scoring drive that went 60 yards in 22 seconds. Ryan Pepiot threw two great passes to Max McCool for a big gain up the sideline, and one to Max McCool for a great catch in the end-zone to give the JV Rocks a 10-6 lead at the half. Brandon Karsnick busted a 70 yard run in the second half, sprung by Zach Krieg and company to put the game out of reach. Julian Lytle also had a good game a running back for the Shamrock offense, breaking tackles and getting hard fought first downs.

The JV football defense played a truly dominant game. They limited the Miller offense to 6 points. Cameron Harrison forced a turnover and the entire Rocks JV defense came together to stop a promising drive on 4th and short early in the second half. Tyler Keller was player of the game for the defense with is best game of the season, recording numerous tackles for loss and several sacks.

The JV football special teams had an outstanding game. Jonathan Mendoza (who previously had not kicked for the Shamrocks), nailed two 30+ yard field goals giving the rocks much needed points and putting the game out of reach for the Millers.

The Rocks JV Football Team will play their final game next at Home on Saturday October 19th at 10:00 am.

Freshmen

The Freshmen Football Team blocked a last second field goal to beat Noblesville on Monday, October 14th. This win gave the freshmen rocks a record of 6-2. Davion Gibson scored the first touchdown for the rocks on a 22 yard throw from Andy Sweet. This score put the freshmen rocks up 7-0 after Miles Clickenbeard kicked the extra point. The defense gave up some yards but then dug their feet in and kept Noblesville out of the end zone and off the score board. Jared Bayha led the team down the field on the ground the next drive ripping off a 40 yard run and then capping off the drive with a 4 yard touchdown run. Will Harrison kicked this extra point making it 14-0. Noblesville drove late and completed a pass on the 3 yard line as the half expired. The Freshmen Rocks went into half leading 14-0.

After halftime the rocks were forced to punt. Noblesville had the ball and again were driving but were faced with a 4th down. They tried a fake punt and threw the ball to a receiver. A rocks defender was called for pass interference. The Millers then eventually scored and made the score 14-7. After another punt by Evan Manley the Millers drove down and scored. This time though they missed the extra point. The score was 14-13 with the rocks leading. The rocks then drove down the field with a determination in their eyes knowing they needed to score. There were long runs and passes in the drive. But when faced with 4th and 22 on the 24 Andy Sweet knew he needed to throw the ball to Evan Manley. He rolled to his left and threw the ball to an open area where Evan was standing in the end-zone. Evan slouched down and caught the ball for a touchdown. Miles added the extra point increasing the rocks lead to 21- 13. Noblesville then came back and scored but failed their 2 point conversion making the score 21-19. The rocks marched down the field but were eventually stopped on the 8 yard line forcing Noblesville to go 92 yards in 2:44. Noblesville tried and they continued to move down the field. Eventually getting to the rocks 12 yard line but Josh Tuffnell and David Mendoza were determined to keep them out of the end-zone. It was 4th and 1 on the 4 yard line and Noblesville decided to try a game winning field goal. Austin Dollens fought through the line and with one big swat of his arm blocked the field goal and Noblesville’s chances of winning the game. If the freshmen team can win their last game they will have a share of the HCC conference championship for the freshmen level. The freshmen team will be at away against Lafayette Jefferson to end their season next Monday, October 21st at 6 PM.

#RockReport - noblesville

Varsity Football secured the Midland Rail trophy with their defeat of the Noblesville Millers on Friday, 17-14.

Offensively, the Shamrocks pounded the football. Elvin Caldwell carried the full load and shined behind the consistent blocking of the offensive line. No series was bigger than the final one that saw the Rocks push down the field and punch the ball in to take the lead for the final time.

The Rock Defense had a stellar night, holding the Millers to a scant 14 points. Mitch Turley was the player of the game, providing several key plays including a diving interception on the Rock 1 yard line. Keyonte Crawford and Nick Krieg frustrated the Miller run game all night, holding the visiting team to a paltry -2 rushing yards with sack after sack. Turner Edwards also continued his trend, intercepting a pass and playing lock-down defense at corner.

Shamrock Special Teams flipped the field with punts a couple times on the leg of Josh Estridge. Plenty of consistent play was found in this phase, with Ryan Wonderlin, Mitch Turley, Matt Kinney, and Cameron Harrison contributing. Matt Crupi had the big play on special teams, recovering a Miller turnover.

Special mention should be given to Zach Krieg, Will McCool, Jacob Pence, Colin White, and Jamarcus Davis. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They had their fins up throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will look to end the regular season on a high note in Lafayette, facing the Jefferson Bronchos. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The Junior Varsity Westfield Football team traveled to Lafayette on Saturday 10/05/13 and played a hard fought game versus the Maverick Bulls of McCutcheon High School. The JV Rocks Football team was victorious with a score of 28-0.

The JV offense started fast with a two-play drive culminating in a 60 yard touchdown pass from Sophomore Ryan Pepiot to fellow Sophomore Will McCool. A series of penalties on ensuing drives resulted in this being the only score for the Rocks offense in the first half. The second half was mistake free football. Because of this focus, the offense was able to score on long drives both resulting in touchdown runs by Ryan Pepiot. Jordan Long and Alex Salinas (a.k.a. El Guapo) set the tone for the offensive line blocking well and leading to those touchdowns in the second half.

The JV football defense played an outstanding game. Russel Reynolds and Jacob Pence shored up the middle of the Rocks JV defensive line making many plays in the McCutcheon Backfield. The Rocks Defense did not allow the Mavericks in the red zone once during the game, forcing their offense to punt or turn the ball over. One turnover came late in the game from “Lockdown” Luke Lammers. The Mavericks Quarterback threw a pass towards his sideline; Luke broke on the ball, intercepted it, and broke tackles and made people miss as he returned the interception 50 yards for the final Shamrock touchdown.

The Rocks JV Football Team will play next at Noblesville on Saturday October 12th at 10:00 am.

Freshmen

The Freshmen Football team secured a winning season on Monday night beating McCutcheon 28-17. The freshmen rocks came out from the first whistle ready to play. The defense came out and got a turnover on McCutcheon’s first possession. Joe Foester recovered a fumble that was forced by a gang of freshmen rocks. Then the offense came out and marched down the field. But found themselves in a fourth and 5 situation but were calm and Andy Sweet through a fade to Josue Gonzalez in the back of the end zone for a quick 6-0 lead. Miles Clinkenbeard then added the extra point. After a McCutcheon touchdown they tried to pooch kick it over the heads of the front line but Justin Frey caught it and took it down to the 5 yard line. Jared Bayha came in and behind an offensive line that moved the entire defense he scored on a great run over the right side. Miles made the extra point pushing the lead to 14-6. McCutcheon scored again pushing the score to 14-12. The offense took over with 1:40 left in the half and scored in 40 seconds on a pass from Andy Sweet to Tanner Nichols down the sideline. The 28 yard pass increased the lead to 20-12 at half time.

The offense started off the second half with the ball and just like they have so many times this year they drove down the field with a long five and a half minute drive. Caleb Sanburn scored to top off the long drive. Making the score 27-12. The defense came in and continued to shut down their offense. The defense was lead by Justin Frey and Austin Dollens. Josh Tuffnell made several tackles for loss and a few big hits on the sidelines. The defense gave up a late touchdown that did not matter making the score 27-18. McCutcheon tried an onside kick but Justin Frey said "no soup for you" and caught the ball. TJ Trzil came in and ran for a first down to finish the game off.

The freshmen team will be at home against Noblesville next Monday, October 14th at 6 PM.

#RockReport - McCutcheon

Varsity Football returned home this weekend and celebrated with a 42-28 victory over the McCutcheon Mavericks.

Offensively, the Shamrocks continued to roll, illuminating another big number on the scoreboard. Elvin Caldwell stepped up and carried the Westfield ground attack, while Devin Reece continued his dominance through the air. The big play of the night came early with a Frank Grimes rushing touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

The Rock Defense had a rough first half, but held the Mavericks to only 8 points in the second half, allowing Westfield to take over. Matt Crupi led the way with Mitch Turley’s consistent play at side. The defense snagged several key turnovers and found a way to lock down one of the most explosive players that the team has yet faced.

Shamrock Special Teams contributed again this week with a big punt block from Nick Alatza. Nick Dowd put key points on the board and Mitch Turley’s solid play carried over in this phase as well.

Special mention should be given to Russel Reynolds, Jordan Grimes, and Jamarcus Davis. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were true hunters throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will take the short trip over to Noblesville to face the Millers. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The Junior Varsity Westfield Football team played the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern’s Junior Varsity football team on Monday the 30th of September at 6:00 at home. The JV Rocks did not play their best football until the 4th quarter and ended up losing 39-21.

On the offensive side of the football, the JV Rocks stopped many of their own drives with penalties and turnovers. The Rocks JV football offense was able to move the ball later in the game and had many bright spots throughout the game. Sam Trompen and Brandon Karsnick both scored touchdowns running the ball on Monday. Sam scored on a quarterback sneak and Brandon scored on a 10 yard run up the middle. Jordan Grimes scored on a 5 yard pass from Sam Trompen later in the game. Max and Will McCool also contributed big catches for the Rocks JV team.

It was a difficult night for the Rocks football team defensively. There was great effort on the part of individuals throughout the night, despite the lackluster result. Evan Harlan and Michael Patterson both were disruptive and made numerous plays from their defensive line positions for the Rocks JV defense. Cameron Harrison also played hard and made plays from his defensive cornerback position.

Will Harrison had a great night for the Rocks JV special teams unit. Harrison, a kicker, made all of his extra points and also placed the ball perfectly on two onside kick attempts for the rocks, both of which were recovered. Daniel Kainrath and Luke Lammers recovered the two onside kicks giving the JV offense a chance to make the game competitive.

Freshmen

The Freshmen Football team lost a heart-breaker to Hamilton Southeastern on Monday night 14-22. The Rocks fought hard but just came up short in the end. The freshmen team quickly took the lead on a pass from Andy Sweet to Josue Gonzalez where he made several defenders miss and got into the end-zone for a 9 yard score. Miles Clinckenbeard kicked the extra point. Then, Hamilton Southeastern answered with a touchdown but missed their extra point. The freshmen team led 7-6 going into the second quarter. After a turnover, Caleb Sanburn threw a 50 yard pass to Tanner Nichols on a halfback pass. This long play set up another touchdown pass by Andy Sweet. This time the ball went to Evan Manley for 12 yards and to put the Rocks up 14-6 going into halftime. Hamilton Southeastern got the ball to start and they took 5 minutes to go down the field and score. They went for 2 and made the conversion tying the game at 14-14. The defense was on the field for the entire 3rd quarter other than 3 plays. They fought hard and never gave up. They were lead by Jackson Garrett with an interception and Josh Tuffnell with several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The freshmen football team came back in the 4th quarter and drove down to the 6 yard line but was unable to get the ball into the end-zone. The defense stopped the Royals and forced a punt. After a long pass to Davion Gibson the Rocks were back down to the 14 yard line. But the Rocks fate was sealed after a fumble on the 6 yard line. The whole team did not give up and continued to fight to the end of the game. The freshmen team will be at home against McCutcheon next Monday, October 7th at 6 PM.

Rocks Special Olympics

Saturday was one of our favorite days, and not only because we got to celebrate beating HSE on Friday. Certainly, that was a special night, but what the Rocks did on Saturday was even more special to us. This is the second year we've had the opportunity to host a Special Olympics football clinic. Both years have proven the event to be one of our favorite chances to serve and interact with the community. It's a great time for everyone involved, and something we look forward to putting on each year.

I believe a lot of times, football can seem like a very serious game. In this season, the headlines are full of it. Turn on the TV any given day and you'll probably get your fair share of injuries or personnel changes or controversial calls. A lot of people invest a lot of energy into football with due cause; football is a special game.

But it is a game all the same. Sometimes, it takes a special perspective to remind you. Games are fun. Games bring people together. Games produce smiles and laughter. That is why we love games, first and foremost, and Saturday's football clinic was a poignant reminder of this fact. One need only look at all the faces. What a great game!

#RockReport - Hamilton Southeastern

Varsity Football wrecked the Royal Homecoming Friday night, posting a decisive 38-18 victory over Hamilton Southeastern.

Offensively, the Shamrocks demolished the Royal defense, scoring nearly every time they got the ball. Frank Grimes scored in the air and on the ground, running behind a line anchored by Zane Burtron. Ben Lotfalian snagged a number of key catches, keeping drives alive and greatly assisting the point-generating efforts.

The Rock Defense buckled down after a bumpy start and generated three huge turnovers that allowed Westfield to pull away. Adam Horkay had one of the big turnovers, and locked the Royal receivers down. The always solid Luke Peters and Mitch Turley kept the Royals walled up, and a big interception by Josh Beer turned the tide after the half, breaking the game open for the Rocks.

Shamrock Special Teams took care of business as well, securing the victory with several key plays throughout the game. Jacob Robinson led the way and the consistent play of Jay Simons buoyed play in this phase. The big play of the night goes to the punt team for their fourth down conversion.

Special mention should be given to Gavin Cross, Zach Krieg, Sam Tompen, Noah Smith, and Zach Rader. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They elevated their play throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the McCutcheon Mavericks for Homecoming. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The Junior Varsity Westfield High School football team beat the Junior Varsity Zionsville High School football team on Monday September 23, 2013. The score was Westfield Junior Varsity football 22 points and Zionsville Junior Varsity football 7 points.

The WHS Junior Varsity offensive unit dominated the game with long drives that went the length of the field and ate up clock. The first drive by the WHS Junior Varsity football offense took 8 min of the 10 minute first quarter. Nick Dowd, a WHS Junior Varsity football player, capped off this first drive by the WHS Junior Varsity football offense with an incredible 46-yard field goal. Dowd also kicked a 24-yard field goal for the WHS Junior Varsity football team. The Rocks Junior Varsity football offense scored later in the second quarter with a pass from Sam Trompen to Max McCool, both WHS Junior Varsity football players, for an 8-yard touchdown. Sam Trompen not only passed the ball well all night for the WHS Junior Varsity football team, but also had some great runs for the offensive unit keeping drives alive and picking up big chunks of yards. Trompen scored in the second half for the WHS Junior Varsity football offense on a 2-yard run with a lead block from fellow WHS Junior Varsity football player Julian Lytle.

The WHS Junior Varsity defense had a great showing against the Zionsville Junior Varsity offense. The Rock Junior Varsity football defense held the opposing offense scoreless in the first half, with huge plays from Colton Murphy and Michael Patterson, both WHS Junior Varsity defensive football players. Colton played very fast at mike linebacker, being involved in most of the tackles for the WHS Junior Varsity defense. Mike Patterson, a defensive tackle, played very physical and made many tackles on the Zionsville side of the line of scrimmage. Daniel Kainrath and Cameron Harrison also played well for the Rocks Junior Varsity defensive secondary. Daniel rushed the quarterback on several occasions on a safety blitz and also covered the opponent passing game with great instincts. Cameron covered the opposing receivers consistently, preventing big plays and making pass break-ups when the opposing quarterback did throw Cameron’s way. The Rocks Junior Varsity defense also caused two turnovers. Gavin Cross caused a fumble for the WHS Junior Varsity defense and Cameron Harrison recovered the fumble in the second quarter. Daniel Kainrath and Colton Murphy also combined for a forced fumble and Noah Smith, a WHS Junior Varsity Linebacker, recovered the fumble.

The Westfield High School Junior Varsity football team will play Hamilton Southeastern next Monday the 30th of September at Westfield High School at 6:00 pm.

Freshmen

The Freshmen football team dominated the Zionsville Eagles on Monday, September 23rd 35-14. Zionsville drove down and scored but missed their extra point Caleb Sanburn and Jared Bayha led the rushing attack driving down the field. But Andy Sweet scored on a 7 yard run with Will Harrison kicking the extra point to take the lead 7-6. An interception by Jackson Garrett set up the offense with great field position. The offense then came right back and scored on an Andy Sweet 24 yard run. The defense then had some miscommunication and let Zionsville score to even up the score 14-14. With a late interception in the first half from the Freshmen offense. The defense took the field determined to get the ball back. After a tipped ball Josh Tuffnell jumped up and snatched the ball out of the air. He was not satisfied with just having the ball he also wanted a touchdown. He went rumbling, bumbling and stumbling down the sideline and into the end zone to give the Freshmen football team the lead going into half 20-14. Miles Clinckenbeard made the extra point to push the lead to 21-14.

The second half started with The Freshmen Rocks driving 70 yards and taking 5 and a half minutes off the clock to score on a pass from Andy Sweet to Josue Gonzalez for a 5 yard score. Giving the freshmen team the final score of 35-14 and improving to 4-1 on the season. The Offensive line of Asher Gannon, Austin Dollens, Juan Obergon, Greg Pietsch, Josh Tuffnell and Chad Reeh did an awesome job of blocking and moving the defense out of the way. The freshmen team will travel to Hamilton Southeastern next Monday, September 30th at 6 PM.

#RockReport - Zionsville

Varsity Football hosted the Zionsville Eagles on Friday night, grinding out a 10-7 victory. Offensively, the Shamrocks battled the elements all night, in what would prove to be a sloppy game for both teams. Zane Burtron anchored the O-line, bludgeoning opponents in the mud. Frank Grimes remained consistent in the run game, which had to carry the bulk of the offense due to rainy conditions. The big play of the night was a late pass across the middle from Nick Ferrer to Ben Lotfalian that sparked Westfield’s only score.

The Rock Defense grounded the Eagles for three quarters of scoreless football, giving up a score late with a lead, and holding on for four long downs to seal the victory. Turner Edwards turned in another inspiring performance, notching another interception, and the consistent play of the D-line slugging it out in the trenches stymied Zionsville’s ground attack. Matt Crupi’s forced fumble led to Westfield’s first points on the board, points that would prove to be the difference in the game.

Shamrock Special Teams played a key role in a game that ended up being mostly about field position. Josh Estridge punted the ball magnificently numerous times, and Turner Edwards kept up his exceptional effort in this phase as well. The Field Goal team made sure to capitalize on the Eagle turnover, converting points in a close game.

Special mention should be given to Reynolds, Jacob Eccles, Zach Krieg, Austin Mazura, David George, and Ryan Rubicz. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They made it personal throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Hamilton Southeastern to take on the Royals. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.

#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

A little late this week, but here's the recap of Monday's action...

JV

The Rocks played a game of two opposing halves. In the first half, very little went right for the Rocks, but in the second they were dominant due to their attitude and effort. The Rocks came up short, 30-42, but played well in the second half.

Offensively, the Rocks moved the ball in the first half but mistakes cost them points. They were only able to score 3 points in the first half and found themselves in a 28-3 halftime hole. In the second half, the Rocks made huge plays offensively. The O-Line, led by Zachary Krieg and Jordan Long, played much more physical in the second half. The Line was able to open holes the second half for Jordan Grimes on two long, hard-fought runs for the rocks first touchdowns of the game. Brandon Karsnick also scored on a long run to bring the rocks closer to the Dogs. The McCool brothers hooked up for a trick play touchdown also, Max to Will, to bring the Rocks within 5 points. Unfortunately they would not get closer.

The defense also did not show up for the first half of this game and spotted the Dogs 28 points, but the defense played Rocks-style football in the second half. The Rocks caused 3 turnovers in the second half. Michael Patterson and Chris Davis caused a fumble each. Jacob Pence recovered one fumble and Gavin Cross recovered two, to give the offense multiple chances to make the game closer. Stan Mattingly played very physical and earned defensive player of the game with his second half dominance.

Will Harrison was perfect on his field goals all night. He also kicked a 30 yard field goal in the first half for the only score of that half. Along with those feats, he also perfectly placed an onside kick so that the rocks could recover and score in the second half.

Freshmen

The freshmen football team won a very close game on Monday night, 12-7. They were battling the Brownsburg Bulldogs. The offense drove down through the air midway through the second quarter. On the 5 yard line Andy Sweet made a nice run for the touchdown. The extra point was missed. The Rocks took the lead going into halftime 6-0. After halftime the game kept going back and forth. Brownsburg finally scored and took the lead after their extra point 7-6. The offense marched back down the field and then stalled in the red zone. The defense made 3 excellent stops to force a 20 yard punt. The offense took over with the ball on the 30 yard line and with 3 minutes left. After several holding penalties they were looking at 3rd and 27. Andy Sweet hit Tanner Nichols for 17 yards to bring up 4th and 10 with just over a minute to go. Then Sweet found Caleb Sanburn for a 25 yard gain down to the 5 yard line. The very next play Sanburn ran the ball in for the lead. The defense led by Josh Tuffnell and Brian Skelton stopped them on 4 straight plays to win the game for the rocks. The defense kept the powerful running Bulldogs to under 100 yards for the game. The Shamrocks improved their record to 3-1 and face the Zionsville Eagles on Monday, September 23rd at 6 PM here at home.
