Varsity Football hosted the Zionsville Eagles on Friday night, grinding out a 10-7 victory. Offensively, the Shamrocks battled the elements all night, in what would prove to be a sloppy game for both teams. Zane Burtron anchored the O-line, bludgeoning opponents in the mud. Frank Grimes remained consistent in the run game, which had to carry the bulk of the offense due to rainy conditions. The big play of the night was a late pass across the middle from Nick Ferrer to Ben Lotfalian that sparked Westfield’s only score.
The Rock Defense grounded the Eagles for three quarters of scoreless football, giving up a score late with a lead, and holding on for four long downs to seal the victory. Turner Edwards turned in another inspiring performance, notching another interception, and the consistent play of the D-line slugging it out in the trenches stymied Zionsville’s ground attack. Matt Crupi’s forced fumble led to Westfield’s first points on the board, points that would prove to be the difference in the game.
Shamrock Special Teams played a key role in a game that ended up being mostly about field position. Josh Estridge punted the ball magnificently numerous times, and Turner Edwards kept up his exceptional effort in this phase as well. The Field Goal team made sure to capitalize on the Eagle turnover, converting points in a close game.
Special mention should be given to Reynolds, Jacob Eccles, Zach Krieg, Austin Mazura, David George, and Ryan Rubicz. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They made it personal throughout the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.
Resolve to support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Hamilton Southeastern to take on the Royals. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.
