#RockReport JV vs FC

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their final game of the season on Saturday October 19th.  The Rocks played their ninth game of the season against the Flashes of Franklin Central High School.  The Rocks won a hard fought game with a smothering defensive performance along with clutch offensive plays.  The Rocks won 17-14 and finished the season as JV HCC Champions and a record of 8-1.

The JV Rocks offense was able to sustain multiple drives but seemed to lose steam as they entered the low red zone.  Sophomore quarterback Maximus Webster & junior Quarterback Nick Talley split time on the day and led multiple impressive drives.  Offensive player of the game, sophomore Evan Cannon, ran the ball as hard as any player had all season.  Cannon ran behind a great offensive line anchored by junior center Dakota Arvin.  The big play of the game came in the 4th Quarter when Webster called his own number and was able to punch the ball into the endzone for the game winning touchdown.

The JV Rocks defense had an outstanding Saturday afternoon.  The linebackers and defensive line were aggressive and physical.  The player of the game was junior linebacker Gabe Arvin.  Consistently making plays all day was junior defensive tackle Seth Poriah.  Arvin & Poriah along with the rest of the high flying hard hitting Rocks defense shut the Flashes out in the first half and produced the play of the game with sophomore linebacker Maguire Graybill tipped a pass and sophomore cornerback Ryan Clayton intercepted the ball.

The JV Rocks football season for 2019 is over with an 8-1 record and the title of HCC Champions!

#RockReport Varsity at Franklin Central

Last Friday, your Rocks traveled to Franklin Central to face the Flashes, earning a 19-14 victory. The win assures a 5-4 wining record for the regular season, while the 3-4 conference record puts the Rocks fifth in the HCC.

The Shamrock offense was led by Camden Simons along with the consistent route running of Jacob Riddle. Mason Piening provided the big play of the game when he snagged a long Simons pass on the first play of the game and took it in for the score. The Rock D was led by Grant Joyce, with Alan White and David Frey tacking on solid play on both the front and back end of the defense. Two highlights standout in this one for the defense, with a key goal line stand, as well as a Joyce interception denying points to the Flashes when they threatened over the course of the game. Shamrock Special Teams were led by Carsen Voorhis, along with the consistent play of Lyle Beam. The big play of the game was provided by Mark McLaurin and Bryson Hoover.

Special mention should be given to Eric Jimenez, Jack Woodard, and Alex Wolfe. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they show us what it means to be united, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks will return to action in two weeks time, after the standard 6A first round bye, when they will open sectional play at home against the Fishers Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm on Friday, November 1st.

#Gameday Rocks at Franklin Central

Tonight, your Rocks will travel to Franklin Central to face the Flashes. FC comes into tonight's game with an identical record to the Rocks, 4-4 (2-4 HCC). Last week, they defeated HSE 7-6, and they've also beaten Zionsville in conference play.

The Flashes are averaging 15 points per game on 205 yards (116 ground). They are led by Josh Ruley (#20), who has notched 774 yards on 186 carries with 8 touchdowns. QB Peyton Viewegh (#3) is 77 for 168 on the year, good for 716 yards and 3 touchdowns. His spreads his targets pretty evenly amongst his receivers.

No doubt about it, the Rocks will need to stop the run tonight. Ruley is capable of ripping off big chunks of yardage, and accounts for the primary thrust of the FC offense. The Rocks are in the midst of a four game skid, so they will need unite to stop the bleeding tonight and get back in the win column to end conference play.

#RockReport Varsity vs Fishers

Last Friday, your Rocks hosted the Fishers Tigers, falling 14-19. The loss drops the Rocks to 4-4 overall, and 2-4 in the conference.

Fishers drew first blood on a cold, rain-soaked night, with a long run play. The Rocks answered quickly to knot the game at 7-7. It was a score that would still stand at the break. In the third, the Rocks were able to put together a scoring drive that gave them 14-7 lead headed to the fourth. The Tigers score twice unanswered in the fourth, however, giving them the final edge.

The Rocks will return to action next Friday when they travel to take on the Franklin Central Flashes. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday Rocks vs Tigers

Tonight, your Rocks will host the Fishers Tigers at beautiful Riverview Health Stadium. Fishers comes into the game with a 5-2 record (3-2 HCC). In conference play, they have defeated Noblesville, HSE, and Franklin Central, while losing to Brownsburg and Avon.

The Tigers average 23 points per game on 286 yards (148 ground). There are led by Dylan Scally (#20) who has put up 545 yards and 4 touchdowns on 121 carries. QB Marcus Roux (#12) has added another 184 yards and 4 touchdowns on 49 carries, while passing for 939 yards and 12 touchdowns. Roux's favorite target is Jeffrey Simmons (#86), who has notched 279 yards and 5 touchdowns on 21 receptions.

The Tigers are generally one of the most technically sound teams the Rocks face each year. They will need to execute cleanly on both sides of the ball to earn the victory tonight. Rain is in the weather, so if it ends up being particularly wet, both teams could see a dampened passing game. This would tend to play into the hands of the Tigers, who typically pound the ball and control the time of possession. The Rocks will need to excel in their own running attack, while stopping the run on defense.

No directions needed for this one. Bring a poncho or an umbrella, and come cheer your Rocks on! Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport Freshmen at Avon

The Freshman Rocks of Westfield traveled southwest to take on the Orioles of Avon in a very physical football contest. The Rocks held firm and earned a 37-14 victory, their 6th of the season.

The Rocks shined across the board. Offensively, they were led by the dynamic running back Jalen Herron, who rushed for two touchdowns. Herron earned player of the game honors. Quarterback Tyler Dikos stepped up and led his team throughout the second half, earning the Mr. Consistency award. There were two big plays -- both of which were deep passes. The first was quarterback Collin Lindsey’s perfectly placed touchdown pass caught by Eli Carter who ran it all the way down the field into the endzone. The second was Dikos’s deep pass to first year wide receiver Gabriel Medina.

On defense, Dillon Thieneman joined the freshman Rocks and starred at defensive back, making tackles all over the field. Thieneman was the defensive player for the game. Jalen Herron at cornerback and Brent Stone made their presence felt throughout the game, giving up no easy yards to a talented Avon offense. For their performance, they won Mr. Consistency honors. Herron’s pick six interception was the defensive play of the game.

The Rocks starred on special teams as well. Hunter Harris and Reece Weyer earned player of the game honors, while Eli Carter earned consistency honors. The big play was Luis Rodriguez’s first punt of the game, pinning the Avon offense deep in their own territory.

The freshman Rocks will play their final home game on Saturday, October 12th. Kickoff is at 10:00 a.m.

#RockReport JV vs Avon

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their seventh game of the season on Saturday against the Angry Birds from Avon.  The JV Rocks had a dominant performance in all three phases of the game.  The Rocks never trailed on the day and finished with a 35-14 victory.

The Rocks JV offense had very little trouble moving the ball up and down the field, but several times penalties stalled drives which resulted in no points on several occasions.  The most consistent part of the Rocks offense was sophomore quarterback Maximus Webster who led several scoring drives and finished with a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown on the day.  The offensive player of the game is converted linebacker to running back, sophomore Evan Cannon.  Cannon was thrust into the role of lead rusher when an injury happened and took full advantage of his opportunity.  The big play for the offense was near the end of the second quarter when the Rocks found themselves tied 14-14.  Junior Quarterback Nick Talley found sophomore wide receiver Jackson Wassestrom for a long touchdown pass to give the Rocks all the lead they would need on the day.  Wassestrom finished the day with 2 touchdowns receiving.

The JV Rocks defense an outstanding day stopping the running attack of the Orioles.  The starting linebacking core of sophomore Jackson Anderson and juniors Gabe Arvin, Jonathan Hernandez, and Blaine Riley earned players of the game awards.  Sophomore defensive lineman Kyle Widmer and junior defensive linemen Ayden Hartman, Seth Poriah, and Seth Martin were the most consistent players on the defense.  These first two levels of dominance to the defense allowed the big play to come when junior safety Joey Wolfe intercepted the ball for the first turnover of the game.  Sophomores Thadeus O’Neill, Alex Wolf, and Maguire Graybill won special teams awards on the day for their outstanding contribution as well.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play Fishers High School on Saturday October 12th at 10 a.m away at Fishers High School.

#RockReport Varsity at Avon

Last Friday, your Rocks traveled to Avon to face the undefeated, #1 in the state, Orioles. Unfortunately, they let the birds escape with a close 27-24 victory. The loss drops the Rocks to 4-3 on the season (2-3 HCC).

Both teams traded blows early in this one, with the Rocks up 10-7 in the first. Avon finished the half strong with two unanswered scores, going in 20-10 at the break. The two teams traded blows once again in the third, and then the Rocks scored early in the fourth to make it 24-27 Avon. From there, both defenses clamped down, and the Orioles were able to run out the clock on the Rocks attempted upset. Still, it was a strong showing for a Rocks team in the midst of a 3 game skid, taking the top team in the state down to the wire.

Special mention should be given to Jonathon Frey, Dalen Blanding, Adam Garretson, and Ian Watson. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they show us what it means to be united, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks will return to action next week against the Fishers Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Riverview Health Stadium.

#Gameday Varsity at Avon

Tonight, your Rocks will travel to Avon to face the Orioles. Avon comes into the contest with a spotless 6-0 (4-0 HCC) record. They're also ranked as the top 6A team in the state. Both HSE and Brownsburg played the Orioles close, so the Rocks will have a tough task tonight.

Avon is averaging 34.7 points per game on 301 yards (183 air). They are led by Junior QB Henry Hesson (#10), who has thrown for 1098 yards and 18 touchdowns this year. His favorite targets are Carmelo Mitchell (#15; 21/319/7) and Cohen Murrell (#16; 22/297/3). The rushing load has been split between Chrishon Mccray (#2; 42/307/3) and Jalen Love (#20; 67/252/1). They also have a defensive front that is averaging almost 2 sacks per game.

Avon's top ranking in the state is not by accident. They have shined against tough competition so far this year, and have all the tools for a deep playoff run. The Rocks will need to rebound from a pair of difficult losses and put together a complete, united game tonight in order to steal a victory on their opponent's turf.

It should be a gorgeous night tonight for Friday Night Lights, with the game time temperature in the mid-60's. It'll probably get a bit chilly after the sun goes down, so bring a jacket and come cheer on your Rocks. Need directions? We've got you covered below. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport JV at Brownsburg

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their sixth game of the season on Saturday against the purple Bulldogs from Brownsburg.  The JV Rocks had a gutsy performance.  The final outcome of the game was not determined until there were only 3 seconds left on the clock, but the Rocks pulled out the victory 27-26.

The Rocks JV offense had some difficulty versus the aggressive Bulldog defense.  Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Wassestrom was able to give the offense an injection of life on the first play as he nearly scored on the first play of the game making a 70+ yard catch and run.  The Rocks scored on their first drive thanks to a run by junior quarterback Nick Talley and the left side of the offensive line, sophomore Zach Williams and junior Alex Cummings.  The final drive of the half was orchestrated by sophomore quarterback Maximus Webster who took the team 80 yards on 19 plays to put the Rocks ahead at the half.  The Rocks found themselves tied in the final quarter and facing an unprecedented 1st and goal from the 43 yard line thanks to several penalties.  On 3rd and goal, Webster again had his number called and made a miraculous scramble and throw to the back corner of the endzone for his second touchdown connection with Wassestrom to put the Rocks ahead 27-20.

The JV Rocks defense had an overall excellent day except for a few plays in the second half.  Junior defensive tackle Seth Poriah was the player of the game causing multiple disruptive plays, tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery.  Junior linebacker Blaine Riley was the most consistent contributor for the Rocks defense.  Riley was able to fill in for an injured player and earned the praise of his teammates.  Quoting from a source which I will keep anonymous, “I know we can’t really nominate players for awards but Blaine Riley had a heck of a game”.  The most exciting sequence of the game happened with 50 seconds left in the game.  The Bulldogs had the ball on their side of the field trailing 27-20.  The Rocks played prevent defense and the Bulldogs were able to slowly move down the field and had their own miraculous catch with only 3 seconds left in the game to pull within 1 point.  The Bulldogs decided to gamble and go for the win with a 2 point play.  Junior defensive end Seth Martin turned the quarterback back towards the other defenders and junior cornerback Kyle Pape sealed the win with a big play tackle.  The Rocks won 27-26 on that last second play.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play Avon High School on Saturday October 5th at 10 a.m at home.

#RockReport Freshmen vs Brownsburg

The freshman Rocks were hungry to get back to their winning ways after suffering a 21-19 loss against the Hamilton Southeastern Royals on Monday, September 23rd. At 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24th, freshmen showed up ready to avenge that loss against a tough Brownsburg team who would be visiting the Rocks’ home confines on the 28th.

The Rocks took the field prepared and united, slogging their way through a full four quarter fight; ultimately, the Rocks were victorious by a score of 20-17.

The game started with drives by each team. No scoring occurred until Brownsburg got the first touchdown on a short drive. The Rocks defense did not back down and pushed the line of scrimmage back on a Bulldog 2 point conversion attempt. When the Rock offense went for a drive immediately following, quarterback Collin Lindsey threw a perfectly placed pass to receiver Eli Carter who evaded the Brownsburg secondary and found himself in the end zone for a 60 yard touchdown reception. The Rocks’ PAT attempt was good, giving the home team a 7-6 lead.

Near the end of the half, the Dogs drove down the field and came away with a field goal. At halftime, the Rocks trailed Brownsburg by a score of 9-7.

In the second half, both teams exchanged defensive stops for most drives. Towards the end of the third quarter, Brownsburg scored a touchdown and converted the 2 point conversion, working to a score of 17-7. The Rocks remained undaunted, though. As the fourth quarter rolled around, the resolve of the home team was made clear for all to see. In the final quarter, running back Jalen Herron ran the ball in for a touchdown and wide receiver Eli Carter found his way back to the end zone for a second touchdown.

Offensive award winners include player of the game Eli Carter, Mr. Consistency Austin Knott, and Carter’s 2nd touchdown as the Big Play. Braeden Wagner earns scout team honors for his efforts providing a look to the offense in the practice week.

Charlie Dager earned defensive player of the game honors. Defensive end Brent Stone won Mr. Consistency for his constant quarterback pressures. Tyler Dikos’s interception in the fourth quarter, aided by QB pressure from Brent Stone and Jayden Bernavil, is the big play.

On special teams, Austin Knott earned player of the game. Punter Luis Rodriguez won Mr. Consistency. The big play was Eli Carter’s kick return to the 50 yard line.

The Rocks return to action at Avon on Saturday, October 5th. Kickoff is at 10:00 a.m.
