Hard Work Pays Off

We had a fantastic banquet this week, officially wrapping up the season. It was a great night, and we will really miss our seniors.

That being said, if you are not a senior, off-season workouts have begun. Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri, from 2:30 - 4:30. We would not be honoring our seniors properly if we didn't start working hard to continue the winning trend that they've helped build.

Speaking of working hard and honoring Rocks Family members that have moved on to great things. Here's a link to a great report about Mitch Turley's team at MIT. Mitch has been getting some quality field time with the Engineers, and is a fantastic Westfield representative on the smartest football team in America.

Very proud to be a Rock.

Shamrocks Step Up

This group of young men was faced with a very difficult task. After making a state run, and then graduating a large portion of the starting line-up, it puts a lot of pressure on the incoming players to step up. Just because you're starting new guys doesn't mean that the end goal has changed. Obviously, the Rocks fell short of that end goal on Friday, falling to Snider 32-24.

Yet, a second, perhaps less-defined goal was to represent the Shamrock Football Family well. To come in after a successful previous year and prove that we are no flash-in-the-pan. After struggling through a grueling regular season schedule, we weren't given much respect in the state. We went from top of the polls, to not even top ten.

Respect is earned. It is a lesson learned more often through stumbles and falls than through easy successes. This team was one that had to pave their own road. In the end, they made it back to the Regional game, knocking off the #1 5A team in the state along the way, and falling just short in a fantastic contest. While it was not the end we had in mind, I think there is no doubt that this team laid it on the line to establish that Westfield Football is no short lived phenomenon. We are a program and city that is still on the rise, and we're building something special through the hard work and dedication of the young men that have taken ownership of this program.

Thank you, seniors, for stepping up to heed the call. It was a tall task, and while we know you would all still rather be watching film this morning, we can also say that you represented your community well. Next season we will kick off in a new stadium with high hopes to be practicing when it starts snowing again, but never forget that it was your sweat that fell first on that new turf.

One of the positive principles of life states that we should strive to leave things in a better condition than when we found them. From a football perspective, that applies to both the program and the people in it. While there is no doubt that our program continues to rise, we hope that each of our family members has experience real personal growth this season, and can carry that on to be leaders and competitors on whichever field their next contest takes place.

For us, we will continue to forge ahead with a tip of the helmet toward those who have sacrificed to provide the kind of a experiences that are life-changing. Westfield Shamrock Football continues to have a very bright future, and despite the pain we may feel at the end of something wonderful this morning, it is a very great day to be a Shamrock.

#GameDay Regional Championship, Snider

Here's a quick history lesson. 2014 will be the 50th season that Fort Wayne Snider has competed in football at the varsity level. Not including this season, the Panthers have gone 428-124-3 over that time, winning 77% of their games. They have had only two losing seasons. In the postseason, they are 88-29, winning 75% of their games. They have been to the state title game in 5A five times, winning it once. In the past five seasons, they have made it to the Regional game every year, winning it twice.

On our playoff path, it is likely that only Cathedral has had more varsity football success, and the argument could be made that they often did it at a lower class level. Snider is a prolific football program, and we have a lot of respect for them.

To be the best, you have to beat the best.

Westfield has been to the 5A state championship game once. We have never been to back to back regional games at any level. We have had far more than two losing seasons. We do not often get the opportunity to compete on this stage. Our community has not had the chance to cheer for their home team in many playoff games, period.

It's going to be cold tonight. It's going to be a tough, grind it out game between two well-prepared teams. It could be the last game ever played at Red Stanley Stadium. It should be loud, and green, and full the brim of pride and support for the young men strapping it up, representing to the best of their ability a young and hungry Westfield city.

Will you be there to see it?

Kickoff is at 7:30pm. Choose to be Great.

#RockReport Sectional Championship, Harrison

Rocks Varsity Football took step two of their playoff journey on Friday, defeating the Harrison Raiders 45-24.

Offensively, the Shamrocks put up plenty of points, thanks to the strong play of the Offensive Line (Jonathan Mendoza - LT, Ryan Pape - LG/C, Kelly Thompson - LG, Zach Krieg - C, Austin Dollens - RG, Renzo Alvarez - RT). Those men had a huge night, along with the consistent play of both Westfield Quarterbacks Ryan Pepiot and Andy Sweet. All of the offense really came together during the execution of an under two-minute drive to end a dominating half.

The Rock Defense started and finished solid, with only a little frustration in the middle. Matt Crupi led the way alongside the stout D-line play of Mike Patterson. Crupi's big play came when he knocked down a pitch in the Raider backfield, scooped, and scored the football for some defensive points.

Shamrock Special Teams had a great night as well. The field goal team stepped in and calmly added to the point total, while the Bailey Partlow helped to keep the Raiders contained. Will Harrison came in at the end of the game for a victory-icing punt down to Harrison's 1 yard line.

Special mention should be given to Matthew Tongate, Kaleb Pettijohn, and Austin Ward. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were Great during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the Fort Wayne Snider Panthers for the Regional Championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#GameDay Sectional Championship, Harrison

They say that one of the tougher things to do in football is beat a team twice. Revenge is a strong motivator, and you both know how you match up. The question facing both teams tonight is: Did we improve enough over the course of the season? The Harrison Raiders are a much improved team with a good coach. Though they may not be ranked as highly as their cross-town rivals that we faced last week, teams like Harrison can come out and surprise you.

If beating a team twice is difficult, then repeating as a champion in any bracket is even more so. Our Rocks will need all of your support tonight in order to defend our Sectional Title. It's a home game, so no directions. Follow the detour signs, and bring your voice (and warm clothes). It's a reality that every home game could be our last ever at Red Stanley Stadium. We'd love to see it packed tonight!

#RockReport Sectional I, McCutcheon

Rocks Varsity Football took step one of their playoff journey on Friday, defeating the McCutcheon Mavericks 28-7

Offensively, the Shamrocks stayed determined on a blustery, cold night. Andy Sweet started the game in place of an injured Ryan Pepiot, and did a fantastic job of leading the offense with key contributions from Elvin Caldwell and Ben Lotfalion. Caldwell, in particular, found the end zone for all four touchdowns.

The Rock Defense held an explosive Maverick offense to only one score. Noah Smith declared a no-fly zone, along with help on the outside from Cameron Harrison and Ryan Rubicz. The Rock secondary prevented the Mavericks from gaining pretty much anything through the air, and the rest of the defense held a tops-in-the-state run game to fewer than 4 yards per carry.

Shamrock Special Teams made some big contributions, as well. Bailey Partlow kept consistent contain, while several other Rocks generated big plays. Noah Smith caused a fumble that was recovered by Justin Frey, and Koby Hauser tacked on a stellar punt return that setup a touchdown.

Special mention should be given to Donnie Watson, Christian Mccarron, and Cameron Nance. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were Great during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the Harrison Raiders for the Sectional Championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#GameDay McCutcheon

It's finally here! The start of the playoff journey. Tonight we face a very tough Maverick opponent that could most definitely stop us in our tracks. Most regional sports writers are picking undefeated McCutcheon to win this one. That's okay. We relish the challenge. Everyone loves an underdog.

They're a good team with a fantastic running back. We have to go play them at their home. We need all the fans we can get. I know it's supposed to be cold and Lafayette is a long drive, but it's the playoffs! We need your voices!

If you absolutely cannot make it, the game will be online at www.mtcsports.net or new.livestream.com/mtcsportsnetwork. We'll also be live tweeting @ShamrockFB, as usual. Otherwise, bundle up and come cheer your Rocks on! Here are the directions:

#RockReport JV Wrap Up

We've been busy preparing for the upcoming playoff opener at McCutcheon, but wanted to post a wrap up covering the last two games of the fantastic JV season. So, you get two-for-one today...

The Junior Varsity Westfield High School football team finished their season with two huge victories over Fishers High School and Brebeuf Jesuit High School. The Rocks JV team finished the season with an 8-1 record and champions of the HCC.

The Rocks pulled off a must win against Fishers JV team for a one loss HCC season. The offense for the Rocks had many big plays on the day. Sophomore quarterback Andy Sweet ran the ball well for two touchdowns behind the lead blocks of sophomore offensive linemen Gannon Asher and Chad Reeh. The highlight of the day came during the second quarter when sophomore quarterback/running back Caleb Sanburn engineered a drive during a tied game. On 4th and one at the 50-yard line, the Rocks offensive coordinator Blair Schlicker made a gutsy call, a reverse to sophomore Drew Neustifter for a touchdown.

The Rocks defense had a great day against a very good Fishers offensive unit. The defense made four outstanding plays on the day that gave the Rocks the win. The first was a three and out that turned into a blocked punt by sophomore linebacker Hank Grenda which set up an offensive score. The second big play came on a blocked extra point by sophomore linebacker Jackson Garrett. The next big play came after another special teams play, a fumbled snap on a punt that backed up the Rocks defense deep in Rocks territory. The defense stepped up big and forced a 4th down turnover on downs to keep the Rocks in the lead. The third came during a 2-point attempt by Fishers, when sophomore linebacker Justin Frey blitzed off the edge and sacked the quarterback keeping the game at an ultimately insurmountable 9-point lead for the Rocks.

The JV Rocks finished their season with a dominating performance over an outmatched Brebeuf JV team. The Rocks won 33-0 and had many outstanding performances. The Rocks special teams stepped up big when sophomore linebacker Hank Grenda blocked a punt and scooped and scored early in the game. The defense dominated the day with sophomore lineman Liam Jagow, Brian Skelton, and Matthew Tongate harassing the Brebeuf quarterback all day long and leaving little for the other members of the defense to do throughout the day. Sophomore quarterback Andy Sweet threw for a touchdown and ran for two more and anchored the offense. The cherry on top of the sundae that was the 2014 JV season came when sophomore running back Ruslan Siadovich Abamislimov scampered around the left end, juked the defender zeroing in on him out of his shoes, and darted into the end zone with a 20-yard sprint, all to the chants of “The Rus is Loose” coming from the sideline.

Great job, JV Rocks!

#RockReport Washington

Rocks Varsity Football won big over the George Washington Continentals Friday night, 42-0.

We’d like to give a huge shout out to the Continentals for coming to our place and playing hard despite having only 13 healthy players. They showed a lot of heart, and hopefully it was a fun atmosphere and competition for them, too.

Offensively, the Shamrocks started slow but quickly found a groove. Ryan Pepiot led the way, along with the consistent play of Renzo Alvarez. Ben Lotfalian and Milo Beam tacked on a pair of TD receptions for the night’s offensive highlights. The Rock Defense chased down the speedy Continentals all night with Noah Smith leading the way. Smith had a leaping interception early that set the tone. Jacob Robinson and Daryn Milton added consistent play. Shamrock Special Teams was solid as well. Ryan Rubicz was the special teams player of the game with Caleb Sanburn adding consistency.

Special mention should be given to Drew Neustifter, Matthew Tongate, Zach Patterson, Austin Ward, and Miles Klinkenbeard. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were Great during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football on Friday the 31st, when Westfield will open the Sectional Tournament on the road at McCutcheon High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#RockReport Fishers

Rocks Varsity Football fell to the Fishers Tigers Friday night, 38-7.

Offensively, the Shamrocks struggled to put up points for the second straight week. The lone score came on a Ryan Pepiot run. The Rock Defense didn’t have a great game, either, failing to stop the Tigers for most of the night. They were able to recover a couple of fumbles, and showed character continuing to play hard on what very obviously wasn’t a good night. Shamrock Special Teams tried to perk things up with a few solid kickoff returns, but also gave up a punt return, spoiling this phase as well. Sometimes, it just isn’t your night, and the Rocks never found their groove. Fortunately, there is still one remaining regular season game, and then the playoffs. Though the goal of a repeat conference title will remain unrealized this season, there remain several other goals for the team to achieve.

Special mention should be given to Joe Foster and Tanner Nichols. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They showed grit during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the George Washington Community High School Continentals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#RockReport Avon JV

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team had a game of extremes swings in momentum and emotion. The team pulled together a victory against a good Avon JV football team.

The game started with a dominant performance by the Westfield Defensive unit. The game was started with two consecutive negative yardage plays, forcing the Orioles offense back to their own goal line. On the third play of the game, sophomore linebacker Justin Frey ripped the football way from the Avon running back in the end zone and scored his third defensive touchdown of the year. The juggernaut that was the Westfield Defense on this day, caused a second turn over on the Orioles second drive when sophomores Josh Tuffnell and Brian Skelton combined for a devastating hit on the Avon running back that was then recovered by Joe Foster. On the third possession for the Orioles, they were again forced into the shadow of their own end zone and an errant snap resulted in a safety. In the first three attempts by the Avon offense, the Westfield DEFENSE scored a total of 9 points. The half was drawn to a close with a field goal by Miles Clinkenbeard after a great drive engineered by quarterback Andy Sweet.

The second half started with the Rocks on offense, putting together one of their most dominant drives of the year, lasting a total of nine and a half minutes and driving a total of 70 yards lead by sophomore quarterback/running back/safety Caleb Sanburn. Unfortunately the drive ended with an interception in the Shamrock end zone leading to the first Avon score. Later in the third quarter the Orioles returned another interception for a touchdown taking the lead from the Rocks 14-12.

The two teams traded punts for the majority of the rest of the second half and the Rocks were running out of time to mount a comeback. Things were looking bleak for the Rocks when Avon had the ball with under 4 minutes left, until the defense stepped up for a fifth and final time. Frey forced his second fumble of the day and sophomore defensive end Liam Jagow recovered the fumble and gave the Rocks one last chance. The offense did not squander this opportunity, completing a huge 3rd down conversion from Sanburn to sophomore receiver Josue Gonzales, and driving down the field to the Oriole one inch line. The teams traded blows on the goal line, gaining a yard and losing a yard until 4th and inches with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Sanburn took the snap, tried to sneak around the left side, but was met by 2 Avon defenders. The Oriole sideline erupted in jubilant celebration punctuated by a spectator running onto the field and garnering an unsportsmanlike penalty. Unfortunately for the Avon sideline, their excitement was premature. When Sanburn was hit by the two defenders, they caused a fumble. This fumble was recovered in the end zone by Tuffnell and the ROCKS WIN. This game showed the Rocks resolve and grit as they took adversity and bleak circumstances but had the confidence to fight to the end.

The JV Rocks team will compete for the conference title on Saturday October 11th at 10:00 am at home vs Fishers High School.

#RockReport Avon Freshmen

On Monday, October 6th, the freshman Rocks returned to the confines of their home stadium, prepared to take on the visiting Orioles of Avon High School. The young Rocks knew that they would have to increase their physicality and heighten their sense of team unity to come away victorious from this game, and they did just that, winning with a final score of 21-14.

Offensively, the Rocks were led by player of the game Nate Froelich, who bowled his way down the field and knocked off the hapless defenders who attempted to stop him. He found his way into the end zone for two of the three Westfield scores. The offensive linemen held stalwart all day, and opened up the rushing lanes for Froelich against the Orioles’ stout, run-stopping defense. Cameron Nance and Matthew Meyer also had a huge play in the game, as Nance connected with Meyer for a 35 yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, the Rocks showed great improvement and physicality from the previous week. Defensive stops and takeaways were the norm for this unit through the whole game. Kaleb Pettijohn stepped up to be player of the game, wrangling down any opposing ball carriers from his free safety position. Pettijohn also had some huge pass breakups. Seth Tackett, as usual, found himself in the right place to come away with an interception that sealed the game away from the Rocks. The linebackers and defensive line held Avon’s rush heavy attack to a minimum, forcing two fumbles along the way.

Special teams played admirably, changing the field with punts, kickoffs, and great returns. The PAT unit was three for three. This week, the Rocks will travel to Fishers to play their final Hoosier Crossroads Conference game of the season. This is one that you do not want to miss. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. on Monday, October 13th. See you there!

#RockReport Avon

Rocks Varsity Football fell to the Avon Orioles Friday, 23-6, on a rough and blustery evening.

Offensively, the Shamrocks struggled to put up points in the blowing rain. The highlight was a long run from Ryan Pepiot that set up the lone score. The Rock Defense gave up some easy points early, then clamped down and tried to hang on in the cold mud. They recovered two fumbles, one by Stan Mattingly, but it wasn’t enough. Shamrock Special Teams struggled as well, missing a pair of FGs and failing on an extra point attempt. Notably, Nick Dowd upped his season touchback total on a night with brutal weather.

Rain or shine, the Rocks are focused on getting back to work this week and improving in all three phases.

Special mention should be given to Brock Ginder, Gannon Asher, and Matthew Tongate. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They fought during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Fishers High School to take on the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#RockReport HSE and Brownsburg Freshmen

Things got a little backlogged last week, so here are two weeks worth of Freshmen Rock Reports...

HSE
On Monday night, the freshman Rocks returned home to Westfield after having secured a major victory against the rival Millers of Noblesville the previous week. Our young protagonists took the field against another Hamilton County rival – in this case, the Royals from the southeastern side of the county. What ensued was a physical shootout and a continuous display of improvement from the freshman Rocks; however, the young men did not come home with the victory, losing 34-20 to their adversaries. The young men have learned from this difficult setback, and they are ready to go out and succeed in their next game.

Quarterback Cameron Nance again led the offense in its most productive outing since early in the season. Cameron led the aerial attack, while Nathan Froelich and Alec Salsbury pounded away on the ground. With a depleted receiving cast missing contributors such as Kaleb Pettijohn and Bryan Hoover, Nance called on the numbers of some other young receivers, and they answered wonderfully. Matthew Meyer stepped up and made a number of drive-saving grabs. Jacob Miner, who played a little bit of everywhere on Monday night, came down with the football multiple times, including a touchdown on the last play of the game.

Defensively, the young Rocks fought hard the whole game. The defense swarmed to the football, and Seth Tackett made a huge interception off an HSE pass. Logan McClurg came up with a number of big tackles at cornerback, while the linebacking crew of Froelich, Welch, Noyes, and Randolph pursued the ball all over the field.

The special teams unit played admirably throughout the game. The punt squad changed field position for the teams multiple times, and the PAT squad was automatic after each touchdown. Kickoff added some flair, recovering an onside kick that led to a Rocks’ touchdown.

Ladies and gentlemen, although this game’s outcome was not as desired, the young Rocks of Westfield played hard from kickoff through the game’s close.

Brownsburg
On the last Monday of September, the freshman Rocks went to Brownsburg to face the Bulldogs. The young men learned about the values of toughness and grit in their loss to their foes, finishing the game with a final score of 34-7.

Offensively, the linemen showed improvement, taking on the stout rush of the Brownsbug front and paving the way for big rushes by running backs Nate Froelich and Alec Salsbury. Quarterback Cameron Nance also ran his way through the Brownsburg defense multiple times. A depleted receiving corps also stepped up and contributed to the Rocks’ score as Kaleb Pettijohn caught Nance’s ball on a slant route and turned it upfield into the endzone.

The defense of the Rocks had some standout players. On the line, Michael Delaney had a few big plays pressuring the Bulldog quarterback. Connor Henderson contributed with a sack as well. Eli Akers and Aidan Mullett saw some significant action at linebacker in this game.

The special teams units came out and performed admirably. As a punter, Nathan Froelich changed the scape of the field many times and added a point with his PAT kick. Kickoff return handled the onside and pooch kicks of Brownsburg quite well all game.

The freshman class is improving as a whole, and they have had a spirited week of practice. They are determined to be better. Please support the players as they come back home this Monday, October 6th, to take on the Orioles of Avon. You all are greatly appreciated!

#RockReport Brownsburg JV

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team manufactured an “ugly victory” against the Brownsburg Bulldogs.

Two quarterbacks captained the JV Rocks offense throughout the morning, sophomores Andy Sweet and Caleb Sanburn (who was thrust into the spotlight and performed admirably). The game started off with a delay for the Rocks O, when the Bulldogs pulled a dastardly trick and recovered an onside kick on the first play of the day. Sanburn started the say at Quarterback, but Sweet came in during the second quarter and finished off the drive with a 20 yard flip pass to sophomore Devin McGinnis on a busted play. Later Sanburn finished the Bulldogs off with a go ahead score from running back (his third position played in the game). Junior wide receiver Will McCool provided stability for the team, while sophomore Ruslan Abamislimov provided a spark from the backfield to chants of “the Rus is Loose”.

The JV defense brought their A game against a depleted Bulldog offense. Sophomore cornerback Chris Zolto was a Rock for the defense on the edge all game, making multiple plays and preventing big plays. Sophomore Josh Tuffnell made the play of the day when he blitzed into the Bulldog backfield, blew up the beleaguered Brownsburg ball carrier, and caused the brute to belch up the ball. The loose ball was retrieved by sophomore defensive tackle Joe Foster who rumbled, bumbled, and stumbled his way into the end zone with a convoy of every Rock defender on the field. Varsity guard Jordan “Trunks” Long was caught on tape with an incredulous and exacerbated expression on his face.

The Rocks team put together a domineering performance in all phases of the game including special teams. The punt team was able to pin the opponents inside the 5 yard line early in the game thanks to Sanburn’s extra effort. Sanburn was almost able to perform this feet again, but sophomore star linebacker Justin Frey decided to punt the ball a second time into the end zone for a touchback.

The JV Rocks team bounced back from a tough loss last week and managed to get back into the win column. The JV team returns to action on Saturday October 4th at 10:00 am at Avon High School.

Special Olypmics Clinic

Each year, one of our favorite activities is the short clinic we host for Special Olympics. It always serves to remind us what is pure and fun about the sport of football. It is all too easy to get caught up in the wins and losses, the highlights and lowlights, standings and schedules. Sports are so much more than all of those things. Thank you to all of our Special Olympics participants for taking the time to remind us...

Below are some more pictures (for even more, check out SOHC's Facebook post here).

#RockReport Brownsburg

Rocks Varsity Football crated the Brownsburg Bulldogs Friday night with a 35-21 victory.

Offensively, the Shamrocks rolled to an early lead on the legs of Elvin Caldwell. He had help from the solid blocking of Ryan Pape and Renzo Alvarez. Ben Lotfalion snagged a goalline fade for a TD, and Caldwell tacked on a 31 yard TD run, one of many that made the Bulldog D look foolish.

The Rock Defense kept the Bulldogs chained for most of the night, surrendering points late in the game. Westfield’s front line dominated scrimmage, led by Mike Patterson and Jacob Robinson. Ryan Rubicz added consistent play at the corner position, and the entire defense had a pair of early four down stands.

Shamrock Special Teams kept Westfield ahead in the field position battle. Joe Krambeer unleashed the boomstick for several towering punts. Nick Dowd added to his season long consistency with a multitude of touchbacks. The big play of the night goes to Cameron Harrison, who recovered a muffed Brownsburg punt.

Special mention should be given to Josue Gonzalez and Luke Dedrick. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were key wolves during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow packmates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will host the Avon Orioles. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#GameDay Brownsburg

Big game tonight against a very good Bulldog team on the road. Both of us are sitting at 3-2, and need wins to stay alive in the conference title hunt (chasing Fishers). The Star has us winning this one, but it's going to be a tough game. You may want to skip the traffic on I65 and take the back roads down to the game. If so, we've got ya covered...

#RockReport HSE JV

Busy week, so I got this up a little late this week. Apologies!

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team put forth a valiant effort against a very good HSE team. The game included 4 ties and 4 lead changes with the final lead change occurring in overtime with a field goal by an undefeated HSE JV team.

The Rocks were clicking most of the night on offense. Sophomore quarterback Andy Sweet contributed with a hand in 4 scores, three passing and one rushing. The first score of the game came on the first drive with a scramble by fleet-footed Sweet. The second score to tie the game at 14 came on the Rocks second possession with a 35 yard pass from Sweet to sophomore wide receiver Evan Manley. Manley deceived the HSE defenders into thinking he was running a short route, but immediately changed gears and ran a deep route for the touchdown. The third score was for the lead on the very next drive, as Sweet threw another long pass to sophomore receiver Davion Gibson (who has moved to Texas and will be missed). The Rocks went into half time with a 21-20 lead. On the first drive of the second half, Sweet completed a short pass to sophomore tight end Hayden Russell to give the rocks a 27-20 lead. The last score of the night was a 20 yard pass from Sweet to freshman running back Nate Froelich.

The JV defense for the Rocks had many ups and many downs throughout the course of the game. One of the bright spots was the play by sophomore defensive ends Liam Jagow and Brian Skelton. They were work horses for the defense and disrupted the offense regularly throughout the day. The biggest highlight of the morning for the Rocks defense came at the end of regulation. The game was tied 34-34, the HSE offense was driving and time was running out for the Rocks to get a decisive win. HSE was trying to run the ball off the right edge, when sophomore linebacker Josh “Meatball” Tuffnell tackled the running back and forced a fumble recovered by sophomore Hank Grenda. The offense unfortunately could not push the ball in the endzone and gave the ball back to HSE. Promptly sophomore safety Drew Newstifter intercepted an ill-advised pass by the HSE quarterback with about a minute remaining in regulation. The Rocks offense drove down the field and gave themselves and opportunity with :03 seconds left, but missed a very difficult field goal.

The JV Rocks team experienced their first loss of the year, but have bounced back well in practice and are prepared to return to their winning ways on Saturday September 27th at 10:00 am at home vs Brownsburg High School.

Another Stadium Update

You may have seen the picture of the new 50 yard line that we posted on Twitter. Pretty exciting stuff! I wanted to post a few more pictures to update the build process. Things are happening fast. It's beginning to look a lot more like a future field. In addition to the first patch of turf, we also have goal posts!

#RockReport Hamilton Southeastern

Rocks Varsity Football topped the Hamilton Southeastern Royals Friday night, 34-20, to crown the Homecoming celebration.

Offensively, the Shamrock O-Line dominated up front, leading to a several big runs for player of the game Elvin Caldwell. Caldwell had a pair of the 36 yard touchdown runs that helped bury the Royals.

The Rock Defense frustrated HSE’s offense, not allowing anything easy for what has traditionally been a very solid run attack. Jacob Robinson anchored the D-Line, and the consistent play of LB Stan Mattingly stymied the Royals. Noah Smith had the big play of the night, chasing down one of the fastest players in the conference for a shoestring tackle that saved a touchdown.

Shamrock Special Teams had a solid showing Friday, as well. Noah Smith again came up big here with great play across the board. Matt Crupi added consistency, while Nick Dowd drilled field goals from the 21 and 15 yard line to help extend the Rock lead.

Special mention should be given to Liam Jagow, Davion Gibson, and Hank Grenda. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were key wolves during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow packmates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to Brownsburg High School to take on the Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#RockReport Noblesville Freshmen

Monday, September 15th proved to be a great day for the young Rocks, as the protagonists of the plot travelled to the city of Noblesville to take on and defeat the 15-8 Millers in cross-county rivalry action. Coming off a tough loss to a stalwart Zionsville team, the young men knew the burden of responsibility placed on their shoulders as Rocks, and they rose to the call.

The defense set the tone for the night, recording a whopping five interceptions. Secondary defenders Logan McClurg, Kaleb Pettijohn, and Seth Tackett each contributed to enforcing the no-fly zone in Noblesville air space. With the air not providing a viable option, the Millers sought to move the ball by land. Nate Froelich and company resolved to not allow that. The stout inside linebacker filled the holes hard and wreaked havoc for the Miller offense, the pop of his pads echoing through the stadium. Connor Henderson, defensive end, also stepped up, weaving his way through the Miller offensive line, and homing in on the quarterback for a bone-rattling sack.

The Rock O ran a ball-control offense and powered the ball on the ground. The offensive line stepped up against the vaunted Miller defense and paved holes for the running backs, while protecting quarterback Chad Welch in the passing game. Welch, recording his first start for the Rocks, guided the team, calling heavily on the numbers of LaVeal Gibson and Nate Froelich. Gibson powered the ball into the end zone for both of Westfield’s scores, and Froelich busted numerous long runs to get the offense into scoring position. Gibson had another 50 yard touchdown run called back on a penalty in the third quarter.

The special teams performed admirably. The kickoff team flew down the field and gave the defense great field position. The first PAT kick of the season was recorded, as kicker Nate Froelich booted the ball sailing through the uprights.

The Rocks look to continue their winning ways this upcoming Monday, September 22, at home vs. the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern High School. Ladies and gentlemen, come see these young men as they go out to make the community proud. Your support is greatly appreciated!

#RockReport Noblesville JV

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team added to their impressive resume by figuratively grinding the Noblesville Millers into submission by the end of the game. The Rocks ended the game with a rally of points and came away with a 21-6 victory bringing their season record to 4-0.

The Rocks JV offense, added by two freshman feature backs, Nate Froelich and Laveal Gibson, had the ability to move the ball all day but sputtered out late in a few drives. The first score came after a long pass from sophomore quarterback Andy Sweet to sophomore wide receiver Evan Manley set-up the Rocks with good field position. Froelich was able to demonstrate his quick feet, good balance, and great lower body power by scoring on a hard fought run. Sweet and Manley hooked up later in the second half for a 70 yard bomb for a touchdown. The offensive line was able to create holes all day with the help of sophomore offensive tackle Gannon Asher.

The Rocks Football JV defense had many shining moments in the game, outscoring the Millers 7-6 on their own thanks to a late interception returned for a touchdown by sophomore linebacker Justin Frey (his second of the season). A gigantic statement about the Rocks resolve was made after a fumble was lost by the offense deep in their own territory. The defense promptly answered on the next play thanks to sophomore defensive tackle Joe Foster’s forced fumble and recovery. The Millers did not get close to the end zone the rest of the game. Sophomore linebackers Hank Grenda and Jackson Garrett contributed to the team effort with Grenda being a constant disruption to the offense and an interception by Garrett. Disaster was narrowly averted again during a punt attempt by the offense, but sophomore kicker Miles Clinkenbeard. The snap sailed over Clinkenbeard’s head, he chased it for 15 yards, turned around and calmly delivered a huge punt with several Millers bearing down on him.

The Junior Varsity Football team hopes to continue their streak this Saturday, September 20th on the road against the Hamilton Southeastern Royals at 10:00 am.

#RockReport Noblesville

Varsity Football fell to the Noblesville Millers on Friday night, 17-12.

Offensively, the Shamrocks struggled to finish drives, shooting themselves in the foot on several of them. Elvin Caldwell was a bright spot for the offense, pounding out yards on the ground and scoring the lone touchdown from 16 yards out.

The Rock Defense won the turnover battle, with a couple of interceptions and a fumble recovery. Cameron Harrison was the player of the game with strong coverage and snagging one of the interceptions. Mike Patterson had a solid showing for the Rocks on the defensive line, and the big play of the night was a goal-line stand by the Rock D at their own 1 yard line, forcing a field goal.

Shamrock Special Teams started well before struggling late. Nick Dowd kicked a pair of long field goals early that gave the Rock s an early lead.

Special mention should be given to David Mendoza, Elisha Lennon, Chad Reeh, and Christian McCarron. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They were savage during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

#RockReport Zionsville Freshmen

On Monday, September 8th, the freshman squad took the field versus their rivals from Boone County – the Zionsville Eagles. A great defensive battle took place over the course of the game, with the young Rocks experiencing a big learning experience after a 0-3 loss.

Defensively, the Rocks shined all game. All eleven men were swarming to the football as one body, stopping the option attack that Zionsville employed. A hard-nosed defensive line penetrated into the backfield and disrupted the quarterback’s reads throughout the game. Michael Delaney busted through the line multiple times to make stops in the backfield, and Connor Henderson added to that with a sack of the opposing quarterback. Griffin Lickfeldt at middle linebacker found his way into the backfield as well, dialing up his blitzes and producing a bone-crunching sack and multiple tackles for loss. The secondary refused to be left out of the picture, as Logan McClurg stepped up and knifed through the offense to set the hard edge at cornerback. Kaleb Pettijohn played the deep safety, and created a no-fly zone for any ball coming his way. He ended up the game with a huge interception. The stout freshman D allowed only a 46-yard field goal in their valiant effort to stop the Eagles.

Offensively, the frosh squad could not capitalize on the defense’s success; however, many of the players found a way to stand out. LaVeal Edwards busted lose on a 50 yard run that put his squad into scoring position in the second quarter. Wide receiver Brian Hoover also played an electrifying brand of football. Playing against one defender in man-to-man coverage, Hoover used his silkily maneuvered to free himself and get the football in his hands.

On special teams, the Rocks continued to grow as well. Hoover, bringing his impact to the kicking game as well, made a great play on the punt team, allowing his squad to continue on an important drive. Nate Froelich booted the ball deep on kickoff, setting up the defense with great field position to start the game.

The young Rocks lost a tight game this Monday, but they have learned from it and will improve. The young men are not demoralized and are excited to fully take on the challenges that the rest of the season gives them. This upcoming Monday, September 15th, come see the Rocks take on the Millers of Noblesville, in a classic game featuring cross-county rivals. To all the parents, fans, and well-wishers – you are greatly appreciated, and the coaches and young men cannot wait to show their improvement this Monday!

Go Rocks!

Stadium Update

Construction on the new stadium continues to progress. While we're out there every day at practice, the machines are moving and things are starting to take shape. Coach Gilbert asked me to post an update with a picture, as you can see the field starting to take shape. We've seen it slowly emerge, but if you're not out there every day, it probably looks like things are coming together fast. You can see the outline of the track where concrete has been poured, and the field area in the middle is flat and almost ready for turf. Pretty exciting. We can't wait to see what it looks like. Here's hoping that maybe we get a practice or two on it this year. I suppose we'll just have to focus on making another deep playoff run to make sure they have plenty of time...

Here's a panoramic view. Click for the full image.

#RockReport Zionsville JV

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team put together a tour de force win against the Zionsville Eagles in a 28-23 victory. The score does not do justice, the degree of dominance the Rocks had over the Eagles.

The Rocks JV offense started with a great drive, but stumbled at the one yard line and turned the ball over on downs. The Rocks dominating defense stepped onto the field and was un-phased by the change in momentum and quickly shut down the Zionsville team and returned the ball to the Rocks offense who with great deft scored on the next drive. Sophomore Quarterback Andy Sweet ran the ball in for the rocks first score. Freshman running back Koby Hauser ran roughshod behind an offensive line lead by sophomore offensive tackle Chad “Mauler” Reeh. Sophomore wide receiver and future member of the Westfield track team Evan Manley caught a deep pass from Sweet giving the Rocks even more momentum. Manley ran his fastest but was caught at the 1 yard line. This effort set up Hauser who scored the second touchdown for the Rocks in the second quarter. Sweet scored the third touchdown of the first half giving the rocks a huge lead going into halftime. Freshman running back Nat Froelich scored the Rocks last touchdown of the morning on a very hard-nosed run, breaking many tackles and ankles along the way.

The Rocks Football JV defense also had an outstanding morning of demoralizing the opponent by imposing their will. The Zionsville offense was held scoreless throughout three quarters of play, led by the extraordinary effort of sophomores; linebacker Jackson Garrett, defensive lineman Liam Jagow and Brian Skelton, and corner back Chris Zolto. The defense took the field with outstanding aplomb and showed outstanding skills at their craft. The highlights of the game came when Garrett tipped a pass by the Zionsville quarterback and junior defensive end Dalton Davis taught the pass and returned it to set up an offensive score. Sophomore corner back Ryan Pawlak also contributed with a late interception stopping any momentum the Eagles might have had. The Defense only allowed 14 of the 23 points on the night. Seven points were scored by the Eagles in the second quarter on their Kick-off return team after the Rocks third score. The last two points were scored by sophomore wide receiver Davion Gibson, who scampered for 40 yards backwards in order to run out the clock and ensure the Rocks victory.

The Junior Varsity Football team hopes to continue their streak this Saturday, September 13th at home against the Noblesville Millers.

#RockReport Zionsville

Varsity Football claimed the Shining Star Trophy on Friday night, beating the Zionsville Eagles 44-34.

Offensively, the Shamrocks came out firing, opening up a 38-8 lead by halftime. The running game was big for the Rocks, with Elvin Caldwell grinding out the yardage. Brandon Karsnick contributed with a 24 yard touchdown scamper, highlighting the attack.

The Rock Defense grounded the Eagles early, but let up some in the second half, allowing Zionsville to creep back into the game. Matt Crupi led the way for the defense, backed up by the consistent play of Cameron Harrison. Stan Mattingly had the big play of the night with a pick six.

Shamrock Special Teams soared Friday night on the consistent deep kickoffs of Nick Dowd. The kickoff return team also contributed with several big returns. Brandon Karsnick again contributed here by nearly taking the opening kickoff back to the house, setting up the offense with a short field to start the game.

Special mention should be given to Gannon Asher, Christian McCarron, and Zachary Jankowski. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They focused during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Choose to be Great and support Rocks Football next Friday, when Westfield will travel to nearby Hare Chevrolet Field to take on the Noblesville Millers . Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm.

#RockReport Southport JV and Freshmen

JV
The Westfield Junior Varsity football team continued their dominance this season with a 42-26 victory over Southport High School.

The defense started the game in impressive fashion for the Rocks JV team. The Rocks caused 3 turnovers in the Cardinals first 3 possessions, which lead to a 20-0 lead early for Westfield. The first turnover was caused by sophomore Caleb Sanburn who made a great play for an interception. The second was another interception, this time by sophomore Justin Frye. Frye was able to run the pick back for a touchdown. The third consecutive turnover was caused by a bad snap by the SHS center and was recovered by Jackson Garrett on the 15 yard line going in for another score.

The offense also had a very impressive night with 5 scoring drives and imposing their will on the Southport defensive line. The scoring deluge was started by sophomore running back Jared Bayha on a 20 yard scamper for a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Andy Sweet had his hand in 4 of the 5 touchdowns (and almost a sixth but it was called back due to penalties). His first passing touchdown was to sophomore wide receiver Davion Gibson after the third defensive turnover. Sweet then ran in for a touchdown on a qb sneak set up by a long drive aided by the blocking and leadership of Junior offensive center Zach Krieg. At the end of the first half, Sweet threw a long touchdown pass to sophomore Evan Manley to give the Rocks momentum going into the half. Andy Sweet finished the night with a long touchdown run of over 50 yards with the help of excellent effort down field by sophomore wide receiver Josue Gonzalez.

The Rocks hope to continue their undefeated season this Saturday, 9/6/14 at 10 am at Zionsville Community High School.

Freshmen
On Saturday, August 30th, under a cool, grey Indiana sky, the Rocks freshman squad undertook their biggest challenge to date – the 6A behemoths from the south side of Indy, the Southport Cardinals. The steely sky reflected the calm resolve that the young Rocks had within themselves. They brought their manic-paced power offense and their staunch defense to the field and after a grueling dogfight, exited as the ultimate victors.

The Rock offense drove up and down the field all the game, wearing the 3-3 stack defense of the Cardinals down. Gaping holes opened up in the run game as the offensive line asserted their will from first snap until final score. The unit consisting of Robinson, Bako, Marra, Rodgers, Crabtree, and Delaney proved themselves in a trying situation, and answered the call admirably. Player of the game Nate Froelich followed the big men up front as he broke off one long run after another and found his way to the end zone two times. To complement Froelich’s bowl-them-over running style, LaVeal Gibson added his own dose of shake-and-bake magic, slashing through the lines of hapless would-be tacklers. The receiving corps stepped up all throughout the game. Most notably, Matt Meyer stepped up at slot receiver, scoring a touchdown and snagging a forty yard catch that kept the Rocks’ final minute, game-winning drive alive.

Defensively, the Rocks shined all game. Led by Coaches Hampton and Getch, the young squad ran at top flight to the football and held the vaunted Cardinals’ offense to merely two scores. The Rock front held solid all the game, and stifled their opponents’ game plan. Like a mad man, Michael Delaney burst through the line set before him at defensive end. He was not the only lineman for whom the defense had to account, though. Robinson, Spangler, Henderson, and Ross all found their ways into the backfield and disrupted the tempo of the quarterback. The linebacking crew refused to be outdone by their line counterparts and found their way into the hard-hitting action as well. Timing up their blitzes, the backers flew full force into their rivals and omitted the run game from the equation. The secondary set up a no-fly zone throughout the game, batting down passes as they flew into the defenders’ zones.

The special teams unit brought its own unique flair to the game on Saturday. Each player had it as his mission to change the game, and they did just that. With only four minutes remaining in the game, and the score tied at fourteen, the punt team came out and reversed the field for the opposing squad. Behind the boomstick of Bryan Hoover, the special teams unit showed how special it was, and sprinted headlong down the field, downing the ball after it had travelled forty yards. This great show of skill and desire led to a defensive stop and the ensuing offensive game-winning score.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a squad that you do not want to miss! The freshmen are delivering hard-hitting action at a pace that resembles the mighty Ducks of Oregon. Their growth as a unit and individuals is unmistakable, and they are making their community proud. Come see them take the field versus the rival Eagles of Zionsville this Monday, September 8th at six p.m. This promises to be the best game of the young season, and every single family member, friend, and fan are greatly appreciated!

Go Rocks!

#RockReport Southport

Varsity Football fought a tough battle in the home opener against the Southport Cardinals, falling 26-37 to the visitors.

Offensively, the Shamrocks failed to capitalize on several key chances, but otherwise did a great job of gaining yardage and putting itself in a position to succeed. Elvin Caldwell pounded out those yards on the ground behind the consistent play of Renzo Alvarez. The big play of the night was a 54 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Pepiot to Joe Krambeer.

The Rock Defense struggled early but buckled down late, giving the team a chance to win. Matt Crupi led the way, while the consistent play of Martell Fletcher helped to anchor a defense that saw almost 50 plays in the first half alone. Crupi came up big with an interception halfway through the second quarter that gave momentum going into the half.

Shamrock Special Teams had a rocky night as well,
some moments of brilliance and others with missed opportunities. Nick Henderson had a great game as a returner and Will McCool added consistent special teams play. Henderson provided the highlight of the night with a zig-zagging punt return that set up the offense on the 17 yard line.

Special mention should be given to Brian Skelton, Nolan Rodgers, and David Mendoza. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They really played united during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

#RockReport Harrison Freshmen

The Rocks freshmen kicked off their football season Wednesday, August 27th, making the trip to the marshy field of the Harrison Raiders in Lafayette. The frosh squad was chomping at the bit, as the originally scheduled game had been postponed twice due to lightning. After the lightning, the young men of Westfield brought the thunder with them. From kickoff until the clock read zero, the protagonists of the game ran the field at a blazing tempo, scorching the Raider defense numerous times and laying the hammer down defensively.

The Rocks were led offensively by players of the game Nate Froelich and Cameron Nance. Froelich, a running back, set the tone offensively, storming his way down the field for a 70 yard touchdown while mowing down any defender who stood between him and his goal. Nate continued to pound the ball every time he touched it, willing the offense down the field. To complement Froelich’s thunderous running style, Laveal Gibson stepped in and provided his lightning quick skills in running the football, giving the Rocks their second touchdown of the day. Cameron Nance showed the poise of a veteran quarterback. The field general called his own number and ran the ball in for a touchdown and the Rocks’ third score of the day. Between his bursts running the ball, the dual-threat quarterback also assaulted the Raider D through the air, connecting with the speedy slot receiver Kaleb Pettijohn for two more touchdowns. Jacob Miner contributed at multiple positions, coming up with big grabs to keep the seemingly mechanized offense rolling downfield, while the offensive line stood firm in the face of daunting pressure, and acted as five blocks of granite in their protection of Nance and the others.

Defensively, the Rocks rolled over the Harrison protection, and plugged the holes on the runs. Playing against the flexbone option of Harrison, the defensive line led the charge, with Conner Henderson pile driving the Harrison quarterback one time, and Matthew Robinson another, ending a strong first half. Logan McClurg, playing on his island at cornerback changed the game by darting for an errant pass and intercepting it, bringing it past the fifty and into Harrison’s own territory. The linebacking crew was stout, and big plays by Welch, Lickfeldt, and Noyes helped secure the game. Eli Akers also hammered the nails into the Raiders’ coffin by picking off the football as the game wound down.

Coach Myron Burr called an excellent game at special teams. The kicking squads were always aggressive and flying down the field. Nate Froelich displayed that he has a golden toe to match his swift feet. Booting the ball deep down the field, he and the kickoff squad pinned Harrison deep into their own territory. The return teams led by Laveal Gibson always stormed hard upfield, giving the Rock offense an easy path to the end zone.

Students, parents, and fans of all ages: kick off your three day weekend, and come see your freshmen Rocks compete this Saturday, August 30th at home as they take on the Cardinals of Southport High School.

#RockReport Harrison JV

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team started the season in impressive fashion with a 49-0 victory over Harrison High School on Saturday.

All phases of the game were performing at an optimum level. The offense started out with a quick touchdown drive, topped off with a short touchdown run by sophomore QB Andy Sweet. The offense scored 5 more touchdowns throughout the morning, three passes from Sweet to three different sophomore receivers; Evan Manley, Davion Gibson, and Nolan Rogers. Jared Bayha and Koby Hauser added to that total with hard fought touchdown runs.

The defense caused havoc in the Raider backfield all day. The highlight of the morning came when defensive tackle Austin “Tiny” Dollens tipped a pass by the Harrison QB and defensive end Brian Skelton intercepted the pass and ran it back 30 yards for a touchdown. Linebacker Zach Paterson caused another fumble later in the game and Safety Christan McCarron recovered, leading to an offensive score.

Special teams played a pivotal role in creating scoring opportunities for the offense as well. The Raiders first offensive possession ended with a punt, but Jared Bayha blocked the kick and set up the offense which scored two plays later. Kicker Will Harrison had a great day of kick offs and made every extra point attempt. Mitchell Aldrink flew around and made numerous tackles on special teams giving Harrison a long field to traverse to try to score.

The Junior Varsity football team will try to continue its winning ways next Saturday 8/30/14 at 10 am at Southport High School.

Rocks United Giveback

Friday is the home opener for us, and the theme is United. Players have been selling shirts, and we're hoping for the stands to be red, white, and blue. Also, we're always looking for good charities to serve, and we felt that the Wounded Warrior Project went well with the theme. To that end, we've set up a Rocks Football donation page if you are interested. Our goal is $1,000, but I think we should be able to easily achieve that and then some. Please consider giving to this worthy cause.

Thank you to our troops for everything you do for us!

Be sure to pack the house Friday (wearing something patriotic) as we honor those who serve and protect our great country.

#RockReport Harrison

Varsity Football opened the season with a solid win in swampy conditions over the William Henry Harrison Raiders, 35-14.

Offensively, the Shamrocks marched methodically down the muddy field for most of the night. Brandon Karsnick led the way on the ground, with Ryan Pepiot connecting through the air to Milo Beam. Joe Krambeer had the big play of the night, setting a key block that allowed Nick Henderson to score a long TD.

The Rock Defense allowed an early TD, but then dug in and held firm until late in the game, turning back the Raider attack twice in the Red Zone. Matt Crupi led the defensive effort, with terrific pressure all night. The consistent play of Sam Trompen and Cameron Harrison kept the Raiders bottled up. The big defensive play came in the form of a Red Zone stand that deflated the opposing Raiders, and help set the Rocks firmly in charge of the game.

Shamrock Special Teams played well with Nick Dowd leading the way. A majority of his kickoffs found the end zone Friday night. Josh Tuffnell added consistent special teams play, and the big play was when the kickoff return squad nearly broke one for a TD, setting the offense up in great field position.

Special mention should be given to Hank Grenda, Ruslan Abamislimov, and Liam Jagow. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. They really built it during the week, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Building It

Ceremonial groundbreaking for the new stadium was celebrated on Monday. There is a nice article in the Hamilton County Reporter by Don Jellison that I wanted to highlight. It starts on the front page and continues onto page two, with some photos on the following page.

Meanwhile, we've got our own hardhats on, preparing for our Friday contest against the Harrison Raiders. They've got a new head coach this year and looked good in their scrimmage film from last week. Though we are no longer in the same conference, we still want to go up there and start off our season right with a win. If we're going to have the best stadium in the county, we'd better play like we deserve it.

The Few, The Proud

I have a tag for "Workday Wednesday" on here. Throughout most of the world, Wednesday is the very middle of the work week. Or, as the Geico Camel might say: Hump Daaaaay!

For high school football players, Wednesday is the very heart of our practice week. Typically, Monday represents a first look at Friday's opponent. Tuesday is a ramp up day, and Thursday a ramp down day, preparing for Friday. Wednesday is the peak, the last hard work day before Friday's contest. Hence, Workday Wednesday.

I like to use the tag to highlight some of the behind-the-scenes grunt work that our players put in. Football ranks very low in the contest to practice ratio. That is to say, a lot of preparation time goes into a single Friday night game, where other sports have more frequent contests. That means we're putting in a lot of work for a slim shot at our reward.

Today, I wanted to reflect on how we began the season with our workman's attitude. Followers of the program know that our first day of official practice, we don't usually do "football" things. We're not holding drills or lining up or throwing passes. We like to begin with some down-and-dirty, team-building type activities.

This year, I mentioned that we let some Marines run our first practice. I wanted to give you a better picture of what that looked like.

Had you attended the first day of practice, you would have been confronted with a scene right out of the beginning of a war movie. Parking your car, you would have had to wait for a line of players on a rope to go by. A few seconds later, the mottled green and black Humvee they were pulling would pass, a camouflaged man yelling out of the driver side window. Only after shutting off your own engine would you realize that big machine hadn't been running.

Stepping from your nice, air-conditioned interior, a wave of heat would hit you. Despite the recent unseasonably cool weather, it was a normal Indiana August a few weeks ago. Humid. Hot. Distinctly unpleasant.

Walking toward the field, another group of players would jog by you, led by their own Marine. They're not quite in lockstep, or matching dual lines, but the resemblance to the typical basic training movie scene is uncanny.

To your right, the tackling dummies are being broken in. By broken in, I mean pummeled by players. While being "encouraged" by a Marine Drill Sergeant. Think Full Metal Jacket, but a little more PG. These marines were polite, if tough. They realized we weren't going to war. Not their kind of war, anyway.

As you make your way across the field, you would need to dodge managers running to and fro with water bottles. It's imperative to keep hydrated when you're working. The sounds of effort fill the air. Grunts. Shouts. Calls for coordination and encouragement. Dust from the dry field starts to tickle your through and, for a moment, you think about snagging one of those water bottles.

A young man with another player carried fireman-style across his shoulders crosses your path, dripping with sweat.

Nah, he needs it more.

It's very easy to imagine a field of mud and razor wire, soon-to-be Marines crawling beneath with live fire in the air for ambiance. We didn't go quite that far. There was no mud, or shots fired, or wire. Plenty of crawling, though.

As you stand there, taking it all in, you may wonder: Are they preparing to play a game or fight a battle?

Yes.

Is every other team doing something like this?

No.

Did any of them outwork us on that first day?

Not likely.

It takes guts to be a Rock. You better believe our players figured that out on Day One. Not everyone can be a Rock. But the few, the proud... well, they're not Marines. But for a day, they got just a small taste of what that might be like. I bet every other workday will feel like a piece of cake. One does not simply walk into Lucas Oil Stadium.

Go Rocks. Go America. Oorah.

Green-Gold Article

Usually I'll post the Rock Report on Mondays, but we didn't do an internal write-up for the scrimmage this week. Typically I mention all of our players of the week and such. When we start with that, it will be posted on here.

Instead, I thought I'd link an article tweeted to us on the scrimmage by Josh Ellis at the HC Sports Daily website. Got a couple of good pictures in there too.

We're preparing for our scrimmage with Ben Davis this Friday. It will feel good this week to hit a different color!

Green vs Gold Scrimmage

Saturday marks the end of our pre-season camp, and traditionally that means the Green vs Gold scrimmage. This year is no exception. We'll be holding the scrimmage Saturday night at 7pm. Come out and get your first sneak peek at this year's team!

Fundraiser: Chick Fil A

The season has officially started for us and our opening kickoff is a mere 16 days away! We're in the thick of our beginning of season camp... 2-a-days, lots of classroom time, and installing the basic plays that we'll build upon throughout the season. It's a hectic time to be a coach and player (especially when you enlist a small squad of marines to run your first practice!), but when we hit that first game and start rolling, it'll all be worth it.

I wanted to squeeze in a quick post today about a fundraiser going on at Chick Fil A. A portion of the proceeds today will go toward our football program if you stop by, eat, and mention Westfield Football. That's all. No flyer or coupon needed, just tell them you're eating for the Rocks. The fundraiser will run until 10PM tonight, so while I know this is late notice, there's still plenty of time to eat!

We're working hard to make y'all proud on the field. Eat some chicken for us!
