#Gameday Varsity at Decatur Central

Tonight, you Rocks travel to Decatur Central High School to face the Hawks. The Hawks enter the contest with an 0-1 record, having lost 13-30 to rival Franklin Central last week.

Decatur Central's 13 points last week were scored on 371 yards (292 air). QB Peyton Horsley (#12) led the team on the ground as well as the air, netting 332 yards of total offense. RB Kenny Tracy (#13) chipped in another 38 ground yards, while also being a strong receiving target with 95 yards and a touchdown on 7 catches. WR Javon Tracy (#11) put up 115 yards receiving.

The Rocks will look to limit Decatur Central's playmakers by matching up to the variety of looks the Hawks will give to try to get their athletes in space. The Shamrock offense will also look to build on its 55 point performance against Harrison.  This one could turn into a shootout if all of the offensive talent is allowed to roam free.

Last year, the Hawks came to Westfield and left with a win. The Rocks will be looking to avenge that defeat this year. Need directions to the game? We've got you covered below. Watch out for that rush hour traffic on I-465. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport JV at Harrison

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their first game of the season on Saturday against the Raiders of Lafayette Harrison.  The JV Rocks started a little rocky but then dominated the rest of the day, winning 42-8.

The Rocks defense started the day playing physical.  Juniors Seth Martin & Ayden Hartman set the tone from the D-Line on the first drive.  Sophomore linebacker Bryson Hoover also had an excellent game for the defense.  The only time the Rocks faltered resulted in the only score for the Raiders, but the rest of the day the secondary, linebackers, & defensive line were dominating on all 3 levels.

The Rocks offense needed a few possessions to gain their footing, but once they did the offense was rolling.  Junior quarterback Nick Talley was accurate and in control the entire game.  Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Wasserstrom was an explosive play machine, scoring multiple touchdowns and catching the ball deep.  Sophomore quarterback Maximus Webster had the play of the game scoring on an explosive run of 70+ yards, running through and past all of the Raider defenders.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play Decatur Central High School on Saturday August 31th at 10 a.m at home.

#RockReport Freshmen vs Harrison

Football season has arrived for Westfield Shamrocks of all levels. After a varsity victory over the Raiders of William Henry Harrison High School of West Lafayette, the freshman Rocks had the opportunity to play the visitors from out west. They did not disappoint the crowd who came out to enjoy great football in great football weather as they earned a 44-12 victory.

The defense of the Rocks were aggressive and disciplined the entire game as they took on the Raider flexbone option offense. Led by player of the game Charlie Dager, the Rocks only allowed two scores the entire game. The defensive front constantly swarmed to the ball and engulfed the ball carriers in a sea of green. The recent addition of Brent Stone after an injury plagued summer sparked the defensive line as they hassled the Raider quarterback the entire game. Stone earned Mr. Consistency honors for his performance. The defense’s day was defined by a hold-up tackle by Eli Carter and strip takeaway by Charlie Dager. This helped spark an offensive resurgence during the second quarter.

The offense was led by running back Ryan Creager. Creager ran the ball and caught it in the passing game. His great day was aided by the play of a stout offensive line composed of Alex Ashley, Bartholomew Barrett, Logan Gustafson, Reid Askren, and Thomas Taggart. The offense was guided by Mr. Consistency Collin Lindsey, the quarterback, who both ran and passed the ball with great prowess. The big play of the day was a screen pass to Jalen Herron who stormed towards the goal line for 30 yards, bucking would-be tacklers along the way.

On Special Teams, the Rocks made a tremendous impact on the outcome of the game. Kicker Grant Harlowe earned player of the game honors for his perfect PATs and strong kickoff kicks. Mr. Consistency Tyler Dikos made his presence known on every special team, finding ball carriers and finishing their runs. The big play was an Eli Carter punt return for a touchdown.

The Rocks will return to action on Saturday, August 31st, as they travel to Decatur Central to take on the Hawks. Kickoff will be at 10:00 a.m.

#RockReport Varsity vs. Harrison

Last Friday, your Rocks hosted the Harrison Raiders from Lafayette, earning a 55-28 opening day victory.

The Shamrock offense was led by QB Camden Simons, who put up monster numbers on the night. The entire offensive line tacked on consistent play, providing Simons time to make big throws, and opening holes all over the place for a myriad of Rocks runners. The big play for the O was when Simons hooked up with WR Mason Piening on a deep touchdown strike to start the scoring frenzy.

The Rock D started a little slowly, yielding 21 points in the first half. They buckled down, however, only allowing one score the remainder of the way. They were anchored by LB Eli Patchett, with help from the consistent corner play of Benji Welch. The big play for the D came on a Welch forced fumble at the goal line, which DL Popeye Williams recovered, rumbling his way all they back into friendly territory.

The Shamrock Special Teams had a solid night with Eduardo Beltran connecting on all of his numerous extra point attempts. Gabe Arvin added consistency for the unit, while the big play of the night goes to Bryson Hoover. Hoover placed a punt that backed the Raiders up inside of their own 10 and really stalled any momentum they might have gained from a stop.

Special mention should be given to Jonathon Frey, Luke Lewis, Gabe Arvin, and Aydan Hartman. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they show us what it means to be united, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Next Friday, your Rocks will travel to Decatur Central to take on the Hawks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7PM.

#Gameday Westfield vs Harrison

Tonight, your Rocks will face the Raiders of William Henry Harrison High School. The Raiders will be making the long, somewhat arduous journey (depending on the status of I65), to beautiful Riverview Health Stadium. We will be celebrating both the home opener and senior night tonight, so it should be a pretty great environment.

Harrison finished 6-6 last year, winning their 5A sectional. They were knocked out by eventual 5A state champion New Palestine. Since this is the first game, we can't really share any statistical leaders, but this is a Raider team that looks to have loaded up on speed in the offseason. Maxpreps has them ranked as the #11 5A team in the state right. Look for contributions from returning fullback Omarion Dixon (#47) and wide receiver Zion King (#87) on the offensive side, as well as linebacker Quinton Wood (#20) on the defensive side.

It will need to be a team effort from the Raiders tonight, as Westfield has beaten Harrison each of the last 11 times they've faced off. Still, don't sleep on this talented team out of Lafayette, and come out to cheer on your Rocks tonight. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport Ben Davis Scrimmage

This will be a quick report today, as we don't keep stats or score during the scrimmage, thus there really aren't any shout outs to give. It was a gorgeous Friday night for a tune up against the Giants, and it seemed like a friendly, competitive scrimmage. Both teams had some good stops and big plays, showcasing the kind of talent that the greater Indianapolis area is known for. We wish Ben Davis the best of luck to their season.

Your Rocks will open their season by hosting the William Henry Harrison High School Raiders on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

Scrimmage against Ben Davis Tonight

We're one week away from the official kickoff of the 2019 football season. That means it's scrimmage time. As has been tradition over the past handful of years, we'll be meeting with Ben Davis tonight. This year, the scrimmage will be held at Riverview Health Stadium, so we get to stay home.

There are two options for the format of an IHSAA sanctioned scrimmage. We are going with Option B, which does not involve the kicking game. Each team will have 15 plays from the -35 yard line, 10 plays from the 10 yard line, and then 12 plays from the 35 yard line. This series will alternate between teams and have short breaks in between each segment. After that, there will be two sets of 8 plays for each team that is tagged for "reserves." So expect the first three sets to heavily feature the varsity two-deep, and then for the last two sets to feature upperclassmen JV players.

Since there are no JV or freshmen scrimmages, we will also have a short inter-squad freshmen vs sophomore scrimmage tomorrow at 10AM to try to make sure everyone gets some game-like reps. So if you'd like to check out the younger guys, you could pop in tomorrow morning as well.

We look forward to taking the field tonight and showcasing this year's team. The first play is scheduled for 7pm. Hope to see you there.

Green vs Gold

It's been a busy start to the season for us, and we've been neglecting our posting just a bit. We shot out a last minute tweet about the Green vs Gold scrimmage last night, but obviously we would like to get the schedule up on here as well. Look for games to be populated in the next few days. In the mean time, the schedule is already post on the athletic department website here. But, to save you a click, here's a brief look at what's coming up.

With the high school schedule changing this year, it's altered our normal in-school schedule. You may see us out there practicing each day seemingly later than usual. This is generally because of the school getting out later. We also may be sprinkling in a few morning practices since the high school starts later. We're looking forward to trying out the change up and having an occasional evening off. So, if you're a fan and happen to be driving by the stadium early in the morning, you may just see us out there. Give us a honk, because I'm sure we'll all be feeling a little groggy!

The first scrimmage to start the season will be held next Friday, August 16th. Your Rocks will be hosting the Ben Davis Giants with the first action tentatively scheduled to start around 7pm. We'll be posting more about the format in the upcoming week.

If you're holding out for opening kickoff, your Rocks will be hosting the Harrison Raiders in two weeks time, August 23rd, with kickoff set for 7pm. Hopefully the weather stays as nice as it was for the scrimmage last night, and we'll see you out there!
