#RockReport - JV and Freshmen

JV

The JV Football Team suffered a heart-breaker this week. After leading for the majority of the game, the Rocks gave up a late score to lose 12-13 to the Orioles.

Offensively, the rocks moved the ball on every drive. The offense scored on their second possession with the help of Brandon Karsnick running the ball and a long fade route from Sam Trompen to Will McCool for the touchdown. The next drive sputtered out inside of the 5 yard line, but the Rocks were unable to convert. A 3rd quarter run by Jordan Grimes, breaking tackles and outrunning the Orioles for 40 yards helped to put the Rocks on top 12-6. After Avon scored in the 4th quarter, the Rocks received the kickoff at the 1 yard line with 4 min left in the game. The offense drove 90 yards with the help of the offensive line and Jonathan Mendoza and had an opportunity to win the game on a last second fade to Nick Henderson. Nick gave a great effort but could not haul the pass in.

Defensively, the rocks put up a great fight. The whole game, the rocks were giving the Oriole offense fits with countless negative yardage plays thanks to efforts from Evan Harlan and Colton Murphy. Colin White contributed with great plays from the secondary. The Rocks D held Avon to one score until late in the fourth. They gave a great effort and gave the team a chance to win the game.

In the special teams phase, Jonathan Mendoza was a bright light on the kick-off team. The kicker plays a very important role in kicking the ball exactly where it needs to be to give the kick-off team the best opportunity to make a play. Jonathan did a great job of always kicking the ball where it needed to be.

The JV Rocks will at away next week at Fishers High school on Monday the 9th at 6:00 pm.

Freshmen

The freshmen football team got a huge victory this past Saturday morning. They took on the Avon Orioles. The defense forced a 3 and out right away and the offense capitalized on a 23 yard touchdown run by Caleb Sandburn. The offense then marched down and scored again before halftime on a 6 yard throw from Andy Sweet to Evan Manley. At halftime the score was 14-6. The offense got the ball to start the 2nd half and marched right down but had to settle for a 22 yard field goal by David Mendoza. This field goal put Westfield up 17-6. Avon scored to bring it closer 17-14. The defense kept fighting hard and rallying. Then late in the game they gave up a long pass to put Avon up 21-17. After the kickoff Westfield had the ball on their 25 with 1:49 left in the game. There was no fear on the sidelines and the offense calmly marched down the field completing 5 and 7 yard routes with ease. Josue Gonzalez made several important catches in the last seconds of the game. Then with 14.6 seconds left Andy sweet scrambled to his right and found Evan Manley open in the corner for a 4 yard go ahead touchdown. With the score being 24-21 in favor of Westfield after the kickoff and a long throw attempt the buzzer sounded and the Shamrocks were victorious and improved their record to 2-0.

The Shamrocks take on Fishers on September 9th at 6 at Westfield High School field.
