End of Season Rock Report

Only six schools in the state of Indiana get to finish the season on their terms, with a win. For everyone else, the immediate feeling is disappointment. Your Rocks felt the keen sting of disappointment after falling Friday night to the Carmel Greyhounds, 7-28. It was a frustrating finish for a football family that had not wanted the experience to end.

Hopefully, as time dulls the sting, this iteration of Rocks will be able to reflect upon the bonds they formed among their teammates, and cherish the memory of the 2018 football season. There is a lot to look forward to in the future. This year's JV and Freshmen teams combined for the best record we've had in a long while, though they will need to step up to fill in the spots vacated by departing seniors. This is true both on and off the field, as this year's senior class helped to keep the culture of the program strong, taking what had been passed to them, and pushing it onward with another layer blood, sweat, and tears.

As always, we want to close the season with a sense of gratitude. Thank you to all of the fans for showing up and screaming your hearts out. We continue to have one of the best followings in the state. Thank you to the parents for sharing your children and working tirelessly behind the scenes to help make our program a fantastic experience. Thanks to the school and administration for backing our program with all the resources that can be mustered. Know that we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generous community that surrounds the Rocks.

Finally, thank you to our seniors for your dedication and contribution to the team. We are proud and privileged to have coached you. We hope that your experience with us will always rank among the best of your lives and that, as you go forward in life, you draw upon your time as a Rock in order to reach your full potential in life. Remember, once a Rock, always a Rock.

#GameDay Sectional I @Carmel

Tonight, your Rocks will head down the road to take on the Carmel Greyhounds. The last time these two teams faced was in 2009 during the sectional, before 6A even existed as a class. Carmel won that one, 21-7. The Greyhounds enter with a 7-2 record, having lost to Center Grove and Warren Central. The only shared opponent this season was Noblesville, who Carmel beat 34-7.

The Greyhounds are led by QB Tyler Trent with 880 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air on the season. WR Christian Williams is Trent's top target, with 23 receptions and 5 TDs. RB Zach White leads the ground attack, racking up 707 yards and 5 scores for the year. The Rocks will need to bring their A game tonight facing a top ranked opponent that can score some points.

The weather looks to be chilly and wet, so wear some layers. We need warm and lively voices in the stands tonight! Need directions? We've got you covered. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport JV vs Franklin Central

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their 9th and final game of the season vs Franklin Central High School. The JV Rocks team took a few early shots to the chin from the Flashes but answered every adverse condition as if it were an opportunity to show their dominance. The Rocks won the game 40-14 to earn an 8-1 record for the season.

The JV Rocks defense struggled a bit early on in this game. The first two drives for the Flashes offense were long and physical drives where it looked like the Rocks defense would not be able to stop the opposing team all day. After the first quarter, the Rocks defense put the clamps down and shut down the Flashes for the rest of the game. Player of the game, sophomore David Frey, was very productive on the day forcing a fumble and sacking the quarterback multiple times in clutch situations. Sophomore safety Joey Wolfe also contributed with an interception before half. Sophomore cornerback Ian Watson single handedly shut down the Flashes on 4 consecutive plays to keep the shutout in the second half.

The JV Rocks offense dominante through the air. Sophomore quarterback Nick Talley threw for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns on his way to player of the game accolades. Sophomore wide receiver Adam Garretson was the recipient of one of those touchdowns to put the game away. Sophomore kick-off returner Mason Piening started the game by answering the initial Franklin Central touchdown with a kick-off return touchdown of his own to tie the game at 7-7. The big play on offense came from sophomore running back Jack Pfeiffer who scored on a huge screen reception that ran for 60 yards and tied the game at 14-14. Talley connected with sophomore Carson Voorhis at the end of the half to give the Rocks a permanent lead.

This was a great year for this JV team. They persevered and showed great heart while winning multiple close games. Their only loss came in overtime to the JV conference champion Avon team. Congratulations Rocks on a great JV season.

#RockReport Freshmen vs Franklin Central

The freshman Rocks of Westfield finished their first high school season with a 41-24 victory over a physical Franklin Central squad. The Rocks finish with their season with an 8-1 record, and are now excited to be a take part in the varsity team’s quest to be state champions. The Rocks played their last game on Saturday, October 13th, as the brisk autumn weather chilled the morning air at Westfield’s Riverview Health Stadium. While the climate cooled, the Rocks brought the heat from the first kickoff. The Rocks’ Defense forced a stop on FC’s first drive, and then the Rock O went to work. With a dominant offensive line paving the way, the offense mounted dual attacks through the air and on the ground. Led by players of the game Maximus Webster (QB) and Bryson Hoover (RB), the Rocks scored on two of the three drives they had in the first half. Sparked by a big play action pass from Webster to WR Jackson Wasserstrom, Hoover was able to dash into the end zone untouched for the Rocks’ second offensive score. Throughout the first half, the defense played the Flashes’ physical run game tough, not allowing the opponent momentum to really get going. Led by safety Alex Wolf and defensive tackle Kyle Widmer, the Rocks forced a punt from the Flashes’ own end zone. While the punt block unit did not block the punt, they forced a short kick that led to Wolf returning it for a touchdown. In the third quarter, the Rocks really came to life with three scoring drives. Running back Levi Harless returned to the field of play and scored on a long touchdown run, displaying his talented, shifty running. Defensive lineman Gerrick “Popeye” Williams bombarded the opposing offensive line and forced himself into their backfield forcing a fumble that then led to another Rocks score. Two special teams stalwarts -- kicker Easton Snodgrass and holder Evan Partlow -- added to the team’s excellent second half as Snodgrass forced a fumble of his own against the Flashes’ kickoff return unit while Partlow dove into the end zone to convert a two point conversion for the Rocks.

The coaching staff would like to acknowledge the hard work of young men on the 2018 freshman team. Their work ethic, love of the game, and love of each other laid the framework for a special season. Parents, family members, and other supporters are greatly appreciated as well for their enthusiasm and assistance. While the 8-1 record is one of the strongest freshman HCC records in recent memory, it is not the final destination for these young men. We are excited to see them continue to grow as people and progress into being the best team in the state of Indiana. Go Rocks!

#RockReport Varsity vs Franklin Central

Your Rocks hosted the Franklin Central flashes on a cold and rainy Friday night, coming away with a commanding 44-16 victory to end the regular season on a high note. The Rocks finish 4-5 overall, and 3-4 in the HCC.

It was all Shamrocks in this one, as the offense was led by QB Camden Simons with 3 rushing touchdowns in the first half. Offensive lineman Ross Krieg added consistent play for a squad that helped to produce 6 rushing touchdowns on the night. The Rock D had a solid night as well, with Eric Kriskovich coming up with a pick in the first half, and Franklin Bohannon snagging one in the second half. Defensive lineman Ryan Mahoney anchored a line that held the bruising running game of the Flashes in check for most of the night. Shamrock Special Teams were led by Sean Sullivan, who got his first start as kicker and made good on his scoring chances in the first half. Owen McGraw added consistent play across several units, and the kickoff team nearly sprung one, setting up the offensive with excellent field position.

Special mention should be given to Jack Pfieffer, Jonathan Hernandez, and Jonathon Frey. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks will have a week off, as 6A schools start post-season play with a bye, before heading down the street to face Carmel on October 26th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#GameDay Franklin Central

Tonight, your Rocks host the Flashes of Franklin Central High School. The Flashes come into the game on a high note, having notched their first HCC win against HSE last week, 37-28. They are 2-6 overall, and 1-5 in the conference.

Franklin Central averages 11 ppg on 254 ypg (151 ground, 103 air). They are led by senior RB Johnnie Mickle (#8), who has 519 yards on the year and 7 rushing touchdowns. QB Dylan Bishop (#9) has thrown for 824 yards this year, but only 3 scores, all of them to WR Bryce Durm (#89). The Rocks will also have to keep tabs on dual threat Malieki Parks (#11) who will be featured heavily in both the run and passing game out of the backfield. Look for a steady diet of bruising runs complemented by play action passing tonight, as the Rock D will fast another physical running challenge. This one has all the makings of a grinder as the Shamrocks will make the push to end the regular season with a win.

No directions needed tonight. See you at Riverview Health Stadium! Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport JV vs Fishers

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their 8th game of the season vs Fishers High School.  The JV Rocks fought hard and bounced back after a difficult loss the week before with a 35-13 dominant victory over the Tigers.

The JV Rocks defense caused multiple turnovers on the day giving their offense short fields and many opportunities to put the Tigers away.  One of the highlights of the season came when sophomore safety David Frey caused an errant throw after blitzing the quarterback and sophomore defensive end Seth Martin intercepted it on the sidelines.  Sophomore linebacker Gabe Arvin helped seal the deal with a late interception.

The JV Rocks offense was rolling down the field behind the right arm of sophomore quarterback Nick Talley.  The Offensive Line as a unit did a great job of protecting Talley and allowing him to make big plays to sophomore receivers Adam Garretson, Carson Voorhis, Aiden Franzen, and Mason Piening, along with junior receiver Jacob Riddle and freshman tight end Luke Lewis.

The JV Rocks football team will finish out their season as they play Franklin Central High School on Saturday October 13th at 10 a.m.   The game will be at Franklin Central.

#RockReport Varsity at Fishers

On Friday, your Rocks traveled to Fishers to take on the Tigers, falling 7-11. Neither offense was able to score in a back and forth first half, leading to a 0-0 halftime mark. The Rocks were able to punch it in during the third period, with the Tigers answering with a field goal. The Rocks gave up a safety, but lost the lead for good when Fishers scored midway through the fourth. The Rocks marched back down to answer, but failed to convert on four downs deep in their own zone, which resulted in the 7-11 final.

Special mention should be given to Dakota Arvin, Seth Poriah, Adam Garretson, and Kyle Pape. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks will return to action next week in the final regular season game against the Franklin Central Flashes. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#GameDay Varsity @ Fishers

Tonight, your Rocks will travel to Fishers High School to take on the Tigers. Fishers enters this week with a 2-5 record (1-4 HCC), having most recently defeated HCC newcomer Franklin Central 17-12. Along the way, they've lost to Avon, Brownsburg, HSE, and Noblesville.

The Tigers are averaging only 13.4 ppg on 138 ypg (94 ground, 44 air). They are led by senior RB HL Lewis (#22) who has 381 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. He gets some help from senior WR Mason McCartney (#89) on the outside who has chipped in 82 yards and 2 touchdowns. In general, though, this is a team that has struggled to produce offense, but when they do it can come from a variety of players. They've dealt with some injuries, especially at the QB position, that have perhaps really held them back, and relied on their defense to keep them in games.

The Rocks are coming off a couple of close losses to a pair of the top teams in the conference. They'll look to right the ship against the struggling Tigers tonight, but will be entering a hostile environment, facing a well-coached team. It will certainly not be a gimme, and they could use all the friendly voices in the stands that can make the trip.

Need directions? We've got you covered. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport Freshmen vs Avon

The Westfield freshman Rocks returned to their winning ways with a hard fought victory over the Orioles of Avon, winning 20-14. After a bit of a slow start, the offense found their way to the end zone, fueled by the powerful running of back Bryson Hoover, who earned player of the game honors. The offensive line provided great run blocking, plowing forward and carving big holes to run through. On the right side, tackle Will Strahm stood out as Mr. Consistency for his solid performance. The big play was a diving catch made by Jackson Wasserstrom to continue a drive that would eventually lead to a Rocks’ score. Defensively, the Rocks played a consistent, physical football game, holding the Orioles to only two scores. Led by player of the game, Evan Cannon, the Rocks wore down the opponent, forcing multiple takeaways that led to scores. The Big Play of the game was the last play, when the Rocks defense, featuring QB Maximus Webster at safety, got an interception to seal the Rocks’ victory. On special teams, returner Alex Wolf earned Mr. Consistency for solid performances on nearly every special team squad. The Big Play goes to the punt unit for their final punt, pinning Avon deep in their own territory, and making the Orioles drive 81 yards to try to tie the game. The Rocks will travel to Fishers for a Monday night game against the Tigers on October 8 th . Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.

#RockReport Varsity vs Avon

On Friday, your Rocks hosted the Avon Orioles for Homecoming 2018. Unfortunately, the Rocks fell just short, losing 13-20. Avon jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, before the Shamrocks began chipping away at the lead. The Orioles took a 20-10 lead into the halftime festivities. The Rock D settled in and held a potent Oriole offense scoreless in the second half, but the Shamrock offense was only able to put up 3 points in the third. They had a few chances down the stretch in the fourth, but were just never able to get rolling.

Special mention should be given to Joey Wolfe, Jack Pfeiffer, and Jonathon Frey. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks will return to action next Friday when they travel to Fishers to take on the the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday Avon Homecoming

Tonight, your Rocks come home to face the Avon Orioles. The Orioles come into the game with a 5-1 record (3-1 HCC), having lost only to Brownsburg. Conference-wise, they have defeated HSE, Franklin Central, and Fishers. Fishers was their opponent last Friday, where the Orioles earned 33-0 victory.

Avon averages 33.7 ppg on 389 ypg (186 ground, 203 air). They are led by RB Sampson James (#2) who has notched 843 all-purpose yards on the year to go along with 9 rushing touchdowns. He's averaging 123 rushing yards per game, while QB Henry Hesson (#10) tacks on a healthy 181 passing yards per game. Hesson will spread the ball around to a bevvy of receivers, including Jalen Peterson (#11) and Wallace Stovall Jr (#13), who each have around 300 receiving yards this year and 5 touchdowns between them. Avon will look to establish the run game, while utilizing play action passing strikes to move the ball downfield. The Rock D will need to be tough and disciplined tonight in order to hold the experienced Oriole offense in check.

No directions needed for this one. We'll see you at Riverview Health Stadium for all of the festivities. Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport Freshmen at Brownsburg

The freshman Rocks of Westfield played a hard fought game against fellow HCC undefeated team Brownsburg on Saturday, September 22nd. The young Rocks came up just short, falling 16-7. Standout performers included linebacker Magwire Graybill with two takeaways against the Brownsburg offense. Cornerback Evan Partlow made a big interception to start the game, and wide receiver Amarion Ballard caught the Rocks’ touchdown. The Rocks will return to play this Saturday at home in Westfield’s Riverview Health Stadium. KO is at 10:00 a.m.

#RockReport JV vs Brownsburg

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their sixth game of the season on Saturday morning, September 22 at Riverview Health Stadium in, finally, fall like temps.  The temperature didn’t cool down the Rocks as they were able to improve to 6-0 with a 47-26 victory over Brownsburg.

The JV Rocks defense started the day with 2 3 and outs while the offense controlled the ball in the first quarter. The defense controlled the game but for a few explosive plays that kept drives alive for the visiting Bulldogs.  The defense was led by David Frey, as he was all over the field.  The consistent play of Christian Huisden covering their dangerous #11 was a key to the victory.  Seth Martin and Hunter Will combined for big play with Martin stripping the football and Will recovering the ball to keep the momentum with The Rocks.

Special Teams also played a huge role in the win.  Eduardo Beltran was Special Teams Player of the Game with 2 FG’s.  Mason Piening’s sure hands and decisive and consistent fielding of all kicks proved to be valuable.  The air was taken out of the Bulldogs early in the game when Special Teams and Sean Sullivan recovered on onside “selfie” to keep the ball for The Rocks after an early score.

The offense continued their scoring from the previous week with their second 45+ point game in as many weeks.  Jack Pfeiffer led the way with 2 TD’s after being out the week before with injury.   Zach Howard held it all together and made it all click on the offensive line with consistent play and leadership all morning.  The play of the game came in the third quarter after the Bulldogs tried to make it interesting with a TD to close to within 10!  Nick Talley to Carson Voohis ran a bubble pump for a long TD to regain the momentum and help seal the W!

The JV Rocks look to keep rolling next Saturday, September 29 at Avon High School at 10 a.m.  See you there!!

#RockReport Varsity at Brownsburg

On Friday, your Rocks traveled to Brownsburg and faced the Bulldogs, losing in heart-breaking fashion, 28-30. The Bulldogs started the scoring early, but the Shamrock offense answered quickly. The Rock D got in on the scoring with a pick-six in the first half, and the Rocks led 21-16 at the break. A single Bulldog score in the third put Brownsburg on top headed to the fourth. The two teams traded scores, and then the Rock D held on a crucial four-down set to give the offense a chance. The Shamrock offense marched down the field all the way to the one yard line before the Bulldog defense was able to stiffen and hold. With time winding down, the Rocks attempted the field goal that would have given them the lead and put the Bulldog offense in the hot seat. The kick, however, was ruled to have missed and the Bulldogs were able to kneel out the clock after taking over possession.

Special mention should be given to Christiaan Huisden, Mason Piening, and Brady Kelly. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks come home next Friday to face the Orioles of Avon. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

Friday, September 21, 2018

#Gameday Varsity at Brownsburg

Tonight, your Rocks will travel to the west side of the Indianapolis Metro area in order to face the Bulldogs of Brownsburg. So far, the Bulldogs have compiled an impressive 5-0 record (3-0 HCC) defeating Fishers last week 27-20. They have also beaten Bloomington South, Cathedral, Franklin Central, and Avon.

The Bulldogs average 33 ppg on 379 ypg (226 ground, 153 air). They are led by the potent one-two punch of Junior RB Donny Marcus (#20) and Senior WR Bryce Kirtz (#17). Marcus is averaging 163 rushing yards per game, and has notched 6 touchdowns so far this year. Kirtz has added an additional 70 yards receiving per game to go along with 5 touchdowns. The two have combined for 1,428 all-purpose yards on the season. The Rocks will need to clamp down on the offensive threat while carrying over their own offensive momentum from last week's victory.

A bit of a drive required for this one, with country or city options. Either way, we've got you covered with directions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#RockReport Freshmen vs HSE

The freshman Rocks of Westfield defeated the Royals from Hamilton Southeastern by a score of 40-19. This was a great team effort, with many contributors from all sides of the ball. Standout players included the running backs for the offense – Levi Harless and Bryson Hoover – whose aggressive running paved the offense’s way to the end zone on multiple occasions. Mr. Consistency on the offense went to the TE Luke Lewis, as he combined great blocking skills in the run game along with clutch receptions in the passing game. The big play of the game was the Webster toss to Amarion Ballard for a 60 yard touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter. The defense combined its efforts to produce four takeaways. Safety Alex Wolf accounted for two of those takeaways on clutch interceptions. Mr. Consistency Zach Williams was a force on the defensive line, tackling the running back for a loss or pressuring the quarterback on nearly every play he was in. Along with multiple tackles and player of the game honors on defense, Magwire Graybill earned a nod as special teams player of the game. He accounted for two scores – one on a blocked punt, and one on a defensive takeaway. The kicker Easton Snodgrass received Mr. Consistency for his wonderful placement of kickoffs, and the big play was Kyle Widmer’s blocked PAT after HSE’s first score. The Rocks will play Brownsburg at Brownsburg on Saturday, September 22nd . Kickoff is at 10:00 a.m. Go Rocks!

#RockReport JV @ HSE

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their fifth game of the season on Saturday September 15th at the home of the Royals of Hamilton Southeastern. The JV Rocks were able to improve their season record to 5-0 with a 48-26 victory over their out matched opponent.

The JV Rocks defense started the day with a few quick 3 and outs. The defense experienced some difficulty getting off the field on 4th down, giving up 2 scores in 4th down situations, but for the majority of the day sophomore linebacker Kyle Byers lead the team and sophomore defensive end Ayden Hartman added consistent effort for the team. Sophomore cornerback Christiaan Huisden added a much needed interception for the Rocks to help the team increase their lead. The Rocks special teams also added a blocked punt to the turnover trend. Sophomores Sean Sullivan and Joey Wolfe were excellent on special teams all day. Sophomore Seth Martin showed great effort in recovering an onside kick to keep the ball out of the hands of the Royals at the end of the game and ensure a Rocks victory.

The Rocks offense was explosive again thanks to the broken tackles and huge plays made by sophomore wide receiver Mason Piening. The offensive line was very stout and consistently opening holes for hard running junior running back Trevor Lickfeldt. Sophomore tight end Reid Scheppers gave the Rocks offense life on multiple occasions converting huge plays on a bootleg pass and passes over the middle. This is the second 40+ point game for sophomore quarterback Nick Talley and the rest of the JV Rocks offense.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play Brownsburg High School on Saturday September 22nd at 10 a.m. The game will be at home this week.

#RockReport HSE

Last night, your Rocks hosted the Hamilton Southeastern Royals, earning a 34-27 victory. The Rocks jumped out to an early 10-0 lead, but the Royals hung in there and tied things up by halftime. The Rocks took back the lead by a field goal in the third, extended it early in the fourth, but again the Royals stuck with it, putting up a field goal and recovering an onside kick before time ran out on the comeback effort.

Offensively, the Shamrocks had a stellar game, putting up 27 points against a solid Royal defense. Cam Simons turned in an excellent performance, finding Dane Wheeler 9 times in the passing game. Simons ended up with 229 yards to his name, 109 of those to Wheeler. The Shamrock offensive line made a huge impact on the game as well, both with their protection of the quarterback, and forming the backbone of several punishing drives in the second half that featured the ground attack heavily. One of those hard-nosed drives ended with Eli Patchett plowing over defenders to reach the end zone for a score that would end up being the difference in the game. WR Pat Beam also provided a key highlight earlier in the game when he hauled in a long strike from Simons for a touchdown.

The Rock D struggled to stop the Royal running attack early, but was able to make good on key plays that helped turn the tide of the game. The first was a fantastic pick-six by Franklin Bohannon. Eric Kriskovich also tacked on consistent play, helping the D buckle down in the second half. Then, with the game on the line late in the game, the defense held the streaking Royal offense to only a field goal before slamming the door shut after the Royals were able to recover the ensuing onside kick.

In the special teams phase, the Shamrocks were led by kicker Alex Bales, and anchored by the consistent hustle of Owen McGraw. Sean Sykes made a key play that you probably won't see in the highlight reel, as he smothered a Shamrock fumble, securing a ball that could easily have gone the other way.

Special mention should be given to Mason Piening, Sam Baldwin, and Gabe Arvin. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Next week, the Rocks will travel to Brownsburg to face the Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday HSE

Tonight, your Rocks will host the Hamilton Southeastern Royals. Both teams will enter with a 2-2 record (1-1 HCC), with HSE having most recently beaten Fisher 14-10. They also lost to Avon 26-9 the previous week.

The Royals average 13.5 ppg on 143 ypg (58 ground, 85 air). They are led by Junior QB Kody Sparks (#5) who has thrown for 341 yards and a touchdown so far this season. Senior RB Matt Harris (#4) provides the ground attack with 200 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. Sparks's favorite receiver is Junior Ben Boysen (#11) who has 18 receptions for 182 yards. Both teams have struggled to put up points so far this year, so tonight could be a defensive, field-position style game. Even so, both teams have plenty of weapons, so it may be a story of which offense can get hot. Either way, look for an exciting game as two quality HCC opponents square off.

No directions needed for this one! We'll see you at Riverview Health Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#RockReport Varsity at Noblesville

Last Friday, your Rocks visited the Noblesville Millers and walked away with a 10-2 loss. It was a rain-soaked affair, with both teams having to rely heavily on the run game. On the second play from scrimmage, a Miller ball-carrier slipped out from the scrum, taking it all way for the game's lone touchdown. After that, a field position battle ensued, with the Rocks unable to overcome some costly turnovers. The Millers put up a field goal to extend the lead to 10-0 with 4:25 to play in the first half, and then the Shamrocks were able to take advantage of a fumbled punt snap to put them on the board with a safety. 10-2 was the half time score, and it would end up being the final as well, as neither team was able to put up any points in the second half.

Special mention should be given to Zachary Howard, Grant Joyce, and Christiaan Huisden. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Next week, your Rocks will look to rebound while playing host the Hamilton Southeastern Royals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday Varsity at Noblesville

Tonight, your Rocks will take the short stroll down the street in order to face the Millers of Noblesvile. This continues the rivalry stretch of the schedule, as the Midland Rail trophy is on the line tonight. The Millers come in with a 1-2 record (1-0 HCC), having handed Fishers a conference loss last week, 21-9. Noblesville is under new management this year, as Justin Roden has taken over the helm as head coach. The new look Millers are only averaging 11.7 ppg on 166 ypg (80 ground/86 air), however their schedule is a bit front loaded with Cathedral and Carmel to open the season. Look for a hungry team ready to up those averages.

The Millers are led by senior QB Grant Gremel's (#14) 257 passing yards. He'll spread the ball around pretty evenly, often finding RB Luke Blevins (#7) on check downs for big gains. Blevins tacks on an additional 191 yards rushing on the year. The Rock D look to limit these senior leaders, while putting up points of their own. The Midland Rail rivalry games have typically been down-to-the-wire, grind-it-out sorts of games, and with the weather looking to be wet tonight, expected more of the same.

Need directions? It's only 7.7 miles, but we've still got ya covered! Bring your rain gear and we'll see you for kickoff at 7pm!

#RockReport JV at Zionsville

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their third game of the season on Saturday this week.  The opponent?  The villainous Eagles of Zionsville Community High School.  The game was exciting and the score vacillated like a metronome in prestissimo, but the JV Rocks were eventually able to take control and win the game 47-36.

Both teams defenses started the day with a bend but don’t break mentality, allowing the opposing offense to establish an early drive before having to punt.  The Rocks offense drew first blood when sophomore quarterback and player of the game Nick Talley connected with sophomore Ayden Franzen for a red zone touchdown.  The Eagles answered with a score of their own, despite a forced fumble by sophomore special teams player of the game David Frey.

The next drive Talley, punched the ball in for 1 yard after sophomore running back Jack Pfeiffer carried them down the field, but Zionsville answered right back with a long touchdown of their own.  Before the half, the Rocks offense was forced to punt but were able to pin the Eagles deep in their own territory.  The JV Rocks defense earned their keep and forced the Eagles backwards giving the offense outstanding field position leading to a Pfeiffer score.  The Rocks ended the half with an interception by sophomore safety Joey Wolfe.

The second half was more of the same.  The Rocks defense allowed a long opening drive touchdown, and the Rocks offense answered with a long touchdown of their own from Talley to Franzen.  The Eagles scored a long touchdown of their own, and the Rocks answered with a long pass and touchdown from Talley to sophomore wide receiver Carson Voorhis.

The Rocks finally caught a break when sophomore defensive player of the game Zander Nguyen was finally able to take the Eagles quarterback down on 4th down forcing a turnover on downs.  The Rocks offense was unable to extend their lead.  The Eagles drove the ball down and scored with a 2-point conversion giving the Eagles the lead late in the game with a 36-35 score.  The pressure was on the Rocks to answer a score with a score again.  On 3rd and long deep in their own territory, Talley was able to work his magic and connect with Voorhis for another long play setting the Rocks up with the game winning touchdown.  The Rocks found themselves up by 5 points, with the seemingly juggernaut of a Zionsville offense with the ball breathing down their necks.  The defense was able to stand firm with a huge play by sophomore cornerback Christiaan Huisden making a key stop on 4th down on a fake punt play by the Eagles.  The Rocks were able to score again sealing the deal with a pass from Talley to sophomore tight end Reid Scheppers.  Junior cornerback Grant Joyce sealed the game with an interception and a Rocks victory of 47-36.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play noblesville High School on Saturday September 8th at 10 a.m.   The game will be at home (finally).

#RockReport Freshmen vs Zionsville

This Labor Day weekend, the Freshman Rocks of Westfield earned their second consecutive victory in the Battle for the Shining Star against their cross-SR 32 rivals the Zionsville Eagles. Winning by a score of 50-8, many Rocks contributed to this total team effort. Offensive player of the game Levi Harless was nearly impossible to bring down, as he slashed through the Eagle defense, breaking lose for two 70+ yard touchdown runs. Beyond these two runs, Harless, as well as other running backs Bryson Hoover and Jayveon Averitte, charged forward nearly every time they held the ball. This was due to a dominating performance by the offensive line, earning them the award for Mr. Consistency. The five blocks of granite acted as a human wall, paving down everything in its path. Averitte’s touchdown earned him the game’s Big Play award. Defensively, the Rocks found ways to shut down the Eagles’ high-flying offense. Led by defensive player of the game Magwire Graybill, the Rocks played fast and physically. Evan Partlow earned consistency honors for his ability to perform at multiple positions on the defense. The big play award went to the defense on the field during the final drive of the game, as they forced the Zionsville offense off the field. Graybill could not be stopped on either defense or special teams, as he earned player of the week honors there as well for his excellent effort on kickoffs and his clutch onside recovery. Luke Lewis consistently wreaked havoc on the Eagles’ kicking game, including his two point conversion score -- a pass thrown by Evan Partlow. Next Saturday the Rocks will travel to Noblesville to take on their second rival in two weeks -- the Millers of Noblesville. Kickoff is at 10:00 a.m. Go Rocks!

#RockReport Varsity vs Zionsville

Last night, your Rocks hosted the Zionsville Eagles with the Shining Star rivalry trophy on the line. The Shamrocks pounced early, going up a quick 13 points before the Eagles answered in the second quarter. The Rocks were able to punch one in before half to go in with a 20-7 lead at the break. The two teams traded a pair of scores to start the third, but then pounded the run game to a 41-14 lead a couple minutes into the fourth quarter. The Eagles would not go away, however, putting up two more scores before the Rocks could shut the door, resulting in a 41-28 victory for the Shamrocks.

Offensively, the Shamrocks were anchored by the O-line, who dominated the battle in the trenches, opening big holes for the backs all night. Eli Patchett tacked on consistent gains, finding the end zone a number of times. The big play of the night can with Patchett filling in for QB Cam Simons after Simons had been shaken up on a previous play. The Rocks lined up in a "wildcat" formation, with Patchett taking the snap directly and punching it in.

The Rock D held the potent Eagle offense in check for most of the night, coming up with several key takeaways. On the second play of the game, Jeremiah Edwards dropped beneath a slant route and picked the ball off. Owen McGraw also turned in a fantastic performance, snagging an interception of his own later in the game.

On special teams, the Rocks were led by snapping specialist Sam Lupear. The Eagles don't often use their kicking game, but when they did Jacob Riddle made them pay with a solid return, splitting several defenders.

Special mention should be given to Blair Clark, Andy Manzur, Kyle Byers, Hunter Will, and Eduardo Beltran. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

The Rocks return to action next Friday as the rivalry portion of the schedule continues. They will scoot down the road to face the Millers of Noblesville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday Zionsville

Tonight, your Rocks will host the Zionsville Eagles, for the first of two conference rivalry games. The Eagles come in with a 1-1 record (0-0 HCC), fresh off a 56-6 drubbing of Lebanon. They lost to Pike in week one, 27-19.

The Eagles are scoring 37.5 ppg on 475 ypg (303 air, 172 ground). They are led by QB Josh Wagner (#5). Wagner has already thrown for 412 yards this year, with his favorite targets being RB/WR Tommy Fossett III (#8, 101 ypg) and WR Jordan Hull (#1, 79 ypg). Out of the backfield, RB Gus Baumgartner (#27) spearheads the ground attack, averaging 104 ypg. The Eagles have proven to have an electric offense already this year that the Rock D will need to tether before it takes off.

The Shining Star trophy has resided in Westfield for the last handful of years, but the Shamrocks will face an Eagle team tonight looking to rise up and snatch it. No directions needed for this one, as kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Riverview Health Stadium.

As an added bonus tonight, if you can't make it to the game live, there is a live steaming option. WHMB TV-40 will be streaming the game, starting at 7pm (LINK HERE), while the TV broadcast will be a replay at 10pm. The replay of the game will also be available at that link all week.

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their second game of the season on a Monday this week after a rain delay on Saturday.  The JV Rocks packed up the bus and traveled down to Mooresville to take on the Hawks of Decatur Central in a barn burner of a game.

The Rocks defense started the game off with a 3 and out and interception by sophomore safety David Frey.  Frey also contributed a forced fumble and quarterback sack.  The shining moment for the defense came late in the fourth quarter, the game was tied, and the offense had just turned the ball over deep in their own territory.  The Rocks defense was called upon to rise up, stand firm, and preserve the possibility of a Rocks victory.  With the help of a quarterback sack by sophomore defensive end Aydan Hartman and a pass break up in the endzone by sophomore safety Jonathan Frey, the Rocks were able to stop the bleeding and give the ball back to the offense for the final drive of the game.

The JV offense was explosive on the day.  Sophomore wide receiver Carson Voorhis contributed 3 long touchdown receptions from sophomore quarterback Nick Talley.  Junior offensive lineman Alex Juarez held firm on the line protecting Talley as he connected with Voorhis.  The play of the game came on the last drive, a 3rd down conversion between Talley and sophomore receiver Ayden Franzen to keep the drive alive.  Voorhis’s last touchdown came on a 3rd down play with only seconds to spare.  He caught the ball at the 5 yard line and dove into the endzone giving the Rocks a 26-20 win.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play at Zionsville Community High School on Saturday September 1st at 10 a.m.

#RockReport Freshmen vs Decatur Central

The freshman Rocks of Westfield defeated the visiting Decatur Central Hawks by a score of 20-14. The Rocks’ defense were a brick wall against the Hawk offense, creating 5 takeaways and scoring a defensive touchdown. Defensive players of the game were LB Evan Cannon and S Alex Wolf, along with MLB Bryson Hoover for Mr. Consistency. The big play of the game for defense was the Gerrick Popeye Williams fumble recovery in the end zone for a defensive touchdown. On special teams, Easton Snodgrass found his stride on kickoff, pinning the Hawks deep or forcing a touchback every time. Along with player of the game Snodgrass, Evan Partlow stood out for his consistent effort across all special teams. The big play of the game was the punt unit’s downed punt at the opponent’s one yard line. Offensively, Luke Lewis provided consistent effort with another touchdown reception and great blocking. Jackson Wasserstrom sparked the offense with his touchdown reception in the first quarter.

The Rocks return to action this Saturday, August 1 st , at 10:00 a.m. in Riverview Health Stadium to take on their rivals down State Road 32, the Zionsville Eagles. Go Rocks!

#RockReport Varsity vs Decatur Central

Friday night, your Rocks hosted the Decatur Central Hawks for the home opener. Tied going into the 4th, the Rocks fell short and lost 21-35.

The Hawks came out strong in the first half, but the Rocks hung around, going in with a 13-21 deficit at the break. The third quarter was all Rocks, with the home team equalizing the score with a touchdown and a safety. Even going into the 4th, the Rocks couldn't hold an explosive Hawks offense, and gave up two scores, leading to the 21-35 final.

Special mention should be given to Gabe Arvin, Reid Schepers, and Jonathon Frey. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Next Friday, you Rocks will host Zionsville for the Shining Star Rivalry Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#Gameday Decatur Central

Tonight, your Rocks host Decatur Central for their home opener. The Hawks come in with a 1-0 record, having defeated Franklin Central last week 14-0. This is the first meeting of the two teams, so this both teams will be looking to start off the series with wins.

The Hawks will look to rely on their more experienced defense to limit the Shamrock offense. Last week, their D was responsible for half of the final score with a key pick-six. On offense, the Hawks are led by QB Parker Harrington (#8) who threw for 113 yards and ran for an additional 34 yards. RB Kenneth Tracy (#13) added 27 rushing yards of his own, while also catching Harrington's lone TD pass. The two make for en explosive combination out of the backfield that the Rock D will need to reign in tonight.

No directions needed for this one. See you at Riverview Health Stadium! Kickoff is set for 7pm.

#RockReport JV vs Harrison

The Westfield Junior Varsity football team played their first game of the season on Saturday against the Raiders of Lafayette Harrison.  The JV Rocks started the game on fire and dominated the whole day.

The Rocks defense started out strong by forcing consecutive 3 and outs for the entire first quarter.  The JV Defensive Line as a unit earned players of the game honors.  The DLine recorded multiple tackles for loss and were gluttonous with the tackles not allowing other units in on the action.  Sophomore defensive lineman Seth Martin earned an individual award for his consistently excellent effort.  The big play of the game came as the Raiders were driving into Rocks territory.  The Rocks defense faced a surging Raider offense on a 4th down with less than 1  yard to go.  The Rocks stepped up and stuffed the Raiders bruiser of a back and returned the ball to the Rocks offense to run out the clock.

The JV offense was punishing behind the thundering feet of sophomore running back Jack “Diesel” Pfeiffer and  his ability to punch the ball into the end zone 4 separate times.  Sophomore quarterback Nick Talley added a score when he connected with sophomore receiver Mason Piening for a 20 yard score.  The Rocks O-Line dominated all day opening huge running lanes for the backs.  Sophomore long snapper Lyle Beam along with punter/kicker Sean Sullivan won special teams honors for their outstanding play.

The JV Rocks football team will look to keep their momentum going when they play Decatur Central High School on Saturday August 25th at 10 a.m away.

#RockReport - Freshmen at Harrison

The freshman Rocks of Westfield kicked off their 2018 campaign with a strong start, defeating the Lafayette Harrison Raiders by a score of 42-22. The Rock offense steadily marched the ball on nearly every drive, mixing the run and pass game effectively. The offensive player of the game was offensive tackle Zach Williams, who paved the way for the run game with devastating blocks. Mr. Consistency awards go to quarterback Maximus Webster and running back Levi Harless. The big play was Webster’s touchdown pass to TE Luke Lewis to start the 3rd quarter. The defense played physically the entire game. Leading the charge was safety Mario Chalmers. Kyle Widmer held firm as Mr. Consistency at nose guard. The big play of the game was a tip from Evan Partlow that led to a Mario Chalmers interception. On Special Teams, Alex Wolf wins player of the game honors for his strong returns. Evan Cannon flew down to make multiple tackles on the kickoff team, earning Mr. Consistency. The big play was the first KOR that set the tone for the entire game. The Rocks will take on Decatur Central’s freshman team at home, Saturday August 25th at home. Go Rocks!

#RockReport Varsity at Harrison

Last night, your Rocks traveled to Harrison High School to help the Raiders break in their new field. They came away with a 28-16 victory. It was a tale of two halves, as the Rocks jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first, extending it to a 28-3 score at the half. The Raiders, however, kept fighting, scoring 13 unanswered before time ran out.

Offensively, the Shamrock offensive line followed the lead of Justin Case, opening up big holes for consistent ground gains by running back Nathan Nguyen. Cam Simons contributed a nifty scamper of his own for a TD, capitalizing on a Rock D takeaway. Altogether the offensive racked up 162 yards on the ground and three touchdown runs from three different ball carriers.

The Rock D generated three takeaways. They were anchored on the defensive line by Ryan Mahoney, while Jeremiah Edwards added consistent play at the linebacker position. There were two big plays on defense. The first was Shannon Bola's interception early in the game that evened the takeaway totals after an early Shamrock turnover. The second was a pure hustle play from Jeremiah Edward, chasing down a streaking Raider runner and saving a touchdown.

In the special teams phase, long snapping specialist Sam Lupear delivered strikes all night. The Rocks were also able to slip out of a tight spot deep in their own territory when Andy Manzur delivered a 40 yard punt out of the end-zone.

Special mention should be given to Seth Poriah, Blair Clark, and Griffin Pope. These Rocks made significant contributions in preparing the team for the Friday contest. During the week, they brought it Now, providing the best possible look for their fellow teammates.

Next Friday, you Rocks will host Decatur Central for the home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.

#GameDay Opening Night - Harrison Raiders

The 2018 Indiana high school football season is officially upon us! Tonight, your Rocks will travel to William Henry Harrison High School to take on the Raiders. Harrison finished 6-4 (5-2 NCC) last year, getting knocked out of the 5A tournament by Kokomo in the first round.

Harrison has a brand new artificial field surface this year, having redone it in the off-season. They will be looking to establish a winning tradition on the new field, and the Rocks will be looking to spoil the grand opening. It should be a fantastic atmosphere for opening night, and we hope you will make the journey to support us!

Scrimmage Details

Tomorrow, your Rocks will finally get to compete against someone not wearing green or gold. Friday's scrimmage with Ben Davis will be the traditional last tune-up before the season kicks off on August 17th. Since the scrimmage is organized much differently from games, we wanted to provide the details a little early.

The start will still be at 7pm over at Ben Davis High School. The cost will be $6 to get in. Here's a map with directions:

And, as for the format, here's a link to the full rules on the IHSAA website. We'll be following option B. Hope to see you there!

Practice is Underway!

Your Rocks are back for another thrilling season of high school football. Practice has started, and we wanted to share some images and videos from our first practice. Since family and commitment are the foundation of our team, we like to focus on building that up first. As such, you won't see a lot of football in these images, but you will see teamwork and perseverance. We hope you're as excited as we are to get this season started!

Kaden's Gold Glove

Kaden's site came across my desk today, and I wanted to share. One of my all-time favorite movies is Field of Dreams. In particular, the scene where he plays catch with his dad at the end gets me choked up every time. As much as I love football, there is something special about grabbing a glove and throwing a ball around with a parent. Kaden's site has the simple goal of wanting to share that special moment with as many children as possible by recycling old gloves, getting them to folks who might not otherwise have the opportunity. So whether you choose to play catch with a football or some other ball, I thought this a wonderful idea from a group just down the road in Carmel, definitely worth sharing.

The Danger of Opioids

As a program, we try to pick areas of focus outside of football to try to help our players prepare for the larger game of life. Often, this includes learning even for us coaches. One of our focus topics is Opioid Abuse. I wanted to share a few sobering statistics that were recently passed across my desk...

  • 2016 Accidental Deaths:

    1. Overdose – 63,600
    2. Guns – 38,000
    3. Car Accidents – 37,400

  • More people have died from opioid overdose than in the Vietnam War.
  • The US is 5% of the world’s population but uses 80% of the world’s opioids.
  • Indiana ranks 16th in opioid deaths.
  • Heroin use has doubled in 18–25 year-olds in the last decade.
  • 80% of heroin users started with prescription opioids by the age of 15.
  • Using any substance by age 15 increases the addiction rate 5x due to brain development.
Clearly, you can see why this is an area where we really see value in educating ourselves and our players. For more information, visit: www.overdoselifeline.org.

USA Football Article

With the focus being on football this past weekend, there was ample opportunity to review the "state of the game" across America. One article caught our attention from USA Today. If you are curious about the national conversation, it is a good read.

In Westfield, we have prided ourselves in being on the forefront of the needed changes within the game. We have pioneered new tackling techniques within the state, as well as employed cutting edge methods for diagnosing and treating head trauma. It has been our hope that, by doing our jobs as coaches and learning how to teach the safest techniques that science can offer for the protection of our players - by keeping player safety at the forefront of our minds - that government intervention will be seen as completely unnecessary, at least in our neck of the woods. We also hope that any parents out there trying to decide whether to allow their child to play football or not can find confidence in putting their child into our hands; that we will always do our utmost to return them in even better condition than when we found them.

We believe very much in our sport and its role within our community. We take our jobs a educators seriously with respect to player safety. If, as a parent or player, you ever have any question about how we accomplish all of this, please do not hesitate to contact us one way or another (there is contact information on this page as well as our various social media outlets), especially if you are on the fence about the role football could play in your child's life. We are very proud and confident to be Rocks.

This Day In Football History

We wanted to share an obscure bit of trivia. Today's Google Doodle celebrates what would have been the 127th birthday of Wilder Penfield. While you may not have known of him, he was a 20th century neurosurgeon who contributed to much of what we know understand about brain function.

Penfield was born in the US but lived most of his adult life in Canada. His list of academic achievements are too long to list, but include Membership in the Royal Society (who also counts among its members Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Charles Darwin, and a dude named Stephen Hawking).

Oh....and here is a picture of him when he played football at Princeton. A sub freshman on the 1911 National championship team (which, according to Google, only allowed 15 points that season), he also was named head coach in 1914 and lead the Tigers to a 5-2-1 record. In the middle of the season, Penfield was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for the following year, and he was accepted for admission to Merton College, which granted him special permission to defer his entrance until the end of the autumn of 1914 so that he might fulfill his coaching responsibilities at Princeton.

After completion of medical school and embarking upon his career as a medical professional, Penfield came to realize that he could not carry out an effective approach to knowledge of the human brain and make use of that knowledge all by himself. He began to dream of organizing an institute where neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuro-pathologists would work together with the kind of team work he had learned as football player and coach. This led him to Montreal, Canada, where he joined the medical faculty of McGill University while also working as a surgeon at two different hospitals. If that weren't enough, he would go on to found the Montreal Institute of Neurology which became a respected center for neurological research and treatment worldwide. In his later years, Penfield penned at autobiography entitled No Man Alone, a phrase repeated frequently in the book to underline his emphasis on the team approach to neurological research and treatment.

It's pretty cool to think that maybe the most important neurosurgeon of 20th century played and coached Div 1 football. Not only that, but that the impact the game had on him played a key role in his approach throughout the rest of his life and many achievements.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Penfield!

(For further reading on Wilder Penfield, we found most of our information above in a great article here, as well as a Wikipedia entry here.)
